Ok, there is some evidence that there is some disaffection in the Starfleet ranks and maybe the Federation masses too over the whole DMZ/Marquis issue. Think......

1)Paris serving with them
2)Edington defecting
3)I think Chikotay had some kind of Starfleet background before going to the Marquis
4)Capt. Sisko's friend from the Acadamy defected, I carn't remember his name though.
5) A poster here at the board ( I think it was Patrick Deagan) speculated that because Jake Sisko wrote a story featuring the Marquis, that the Federations young ( and impressionable) might see joining the Marquis as a way of rebelling etc.

So, the question I put before you is this. Do you think that there is enough discontent in Starfleets ranks that some outside force could create a rebellion or a fracture of the Federation?
Do you think that captured or stolen Cardassian ships and equipment could be used to launch raids on DMZ settlers. Would starfleet crews ,already bitter over the colonists being hung out to dry defect?
Do you think whole ships might defect?, bolstering the firepower of the Marquis (allowing them to take the war to the Cardassians, if only to a small degree. I know a few ships defecting would not significantly alter the odds)
Do you think that the Federation masses would accept there governments usual dismissal of the Marquis as terrorists? Would they start finding out whats happening for themselves?

Just some possible lines of thought there. Granted, this will all be conjecture on are part but I think that this could be quite interesting

I believe the Maquis were destroyed during the Dominion War, weren't they?

The core worlds will probably not see any reason to give a shit, because they are living the easy life, supported by their colonies and defended by the buffer space the Federation has accumulated over the years.

Consider how so few Starfleet officers actually joined the Maquis. Sure, I bet there's quite a few that sympathize, but there's a difference between sympathizing and mutiny. Oh, sure, there are some that might feel "morally outraged" about the treatment of the border colonists (although why they chose to colonize right next to a dangerously aggressive nation is beyond me) but I think the vast majority of Starfleet personnel would either side with the official Federation position or simply not care enough to break their oaths to the Federation, becoming wanted criminals and being unable to enjoy the luxuries of Federation life.

Besides, personally, I don't think the Maquis actions were a cause I'd be willing to abandon my life for.

Yes, but this could be discussed regarding pre-Dominion War times as an "alternate history" if you will.

I think you might have a point there. In this senario, the attacks by this hypothetical outside power would be above and beyond the normal level of brutality the DMZ settlers expect from the Cardassians. This could make starfleet crews who sympathize but cannot bring themselves to actually defect do so.

Oh, and naturally this is pre-Dominion trek. Sorry for not mentioning it
