Ensign Kim in command of a ship?
I just watched an episode that had Kim commanding some alien ship. He is a fucking Ensign. Yes, that is an officer but it is an 0 -1. If it were the Army, it would be putting a "butter bar" in command of that ship. Come on. How stupid is this? A senior enlisted man would be more qualified.
I guess Star Fleet does not have a mandatory promotion for junior officers, either. How long did Kim stay an Ensign?

Seven years? Five? The entire time he was on the bloody show, I believe.

Seven years...thne again given the crew...I'm amazed Janeway was given a ship to captain that wasn't a tug.

Okay, he does mention that if it was a regular situation, he would at least be a lt. or lt. commander by now. And he does command a ship for one mission and finds he is not ready for it.
However, I would like to mention that he does grow by the end of the series. In the finale he is willing to take a ship and fly into Borg-infested ship damn near by himself. Looks like he's found his balls. And they're made of brass.

Would you like to take on a bunch of Borg vessels in the Delta Flyer? By yourself?Superman wrote:Neolong, I am sorry but I think you are wrong. How much balls does it take to oppose the Voyager Borg? For Christ sake, the USS Voyager took cubes on by itself!
The Voyager Borg must have assimilated the Pakleds, only to have their stupidity spread throughout the collective.

Since when? The Voyager didn't exactly have an easy time of getting to that Transwarp hub. Do you think you could do it in the Delta Flyer? Without a character shield?Superman wrote:Why the heck not? If I were in the Delta Flyer, I would win! It would be a guaranteed win, too!

But, the Voyager Borg are so weak and pathetic that of course the Flyer is going to escape. The original Borg would have made fast work of the Voyager, but the wussified Voyager Borg cannot stop one stupid cruiser (or whatever the heck it is) under the command of the most incompetent Captain in Starfleet history.
I would say that I probably could have taken them out. Heck, I would not have had any ethical dilemmas either, so I would have just fired on every ship. I could have taken out the Borg by myself. They seem to be too weak and stupid to stop that piece of crap Flyer, so I say I win.

I always liked Kim. He's like this naïve idealist who doesn't understand that his captain is a fucking idiot, the ship run by monkeys, and the hottest woman he's likely to ever meet lost, impressionable and always close by his side.neoolong wrote:Okay, he does mention that if it was a regular situation, he would at least be a lt. or lt. commander by now. Re: Ensign Kim in command of a ship?
One of the things that really annoyed me about this episode, and most Voyager episodes in general, is that as soon as anyone beams over to alien ship, they immediatly know how to operate its computer, and its technology.
Kim should not have been able to read the computer displays let alone fix its warp core.
On Deep Space Nine, when the crew used the captured Jem-Hadar ship to destroy the ketracel white storehouse, it took them weeks to learn how to fly it. And that was after Federation Engineers had months to take the thing apart, and study it.
The idea that Kim could just beam over to an alien ship, and know its systems well enough to command it, is ridiculous.

He deserved a promotion based solely on the number of times he died. Of course, with the "Big Red Reset Button" nobody would remember, but that's besides the point.

That's a great explanation actuallyThe Voyager Borg must have assimilated the Pakleds, only to have their stupidity spread throughout the collective.

I think Janeway got a retroactive series of promotions as well. She was a captain for 7 years and suddenly by Nemesis she is a three star Admiral. I am assuming they gave her a double promotion after Voyager and a couple years later they promoted her again to ensure she stayed behind a desk and never threatened ships again.
As to the crew. Janeway is fucking stupid not having given field promotions. Hell, the captain of the ship is usualy the one to give promotions for duty anyway. She should have had a crew with a handful of Lieutenants and a whole shitload of LT Commanders, Commanders, and Captains. The enlisted people all should have been E-5 or higher as well.
