Who would you have write Trek?

Who would you have write the next Trek movie and/or the rest of Enterprise?

I'd probably have some of the writers from Stargate SG-1 do it. SG-1 is much different than Enterprise, but they're better than B&B and I think that they could come up with some great ideas for Enterprise without destroying the Trek timeline.

I'd bring back Nicholas Meyer.

Well...

I agree that SG-1's writers would be awesome to have write Enterprise. I mean, how many7 historical inconsistencies have we seen? Twenty? Twenty-five?

The writing staff for Farscape would be good or just some Brit Sci-fi writers. Just get some new blood in there.

Iain M. Banks, Richard Dawkings and Stephen Hawkings.

At least they'd get the science stuff right and I'm betting that there'd be plenty of o' superstition bashing.

Banks is an Atheist, just in case someone didn't know, http://www.infidels.org/infidels/produc ... nks01.html

Yep, Iain Banks would be a good choice, although he'd be better for season finale two-part episodes and movies. (His novels tend to be somewhat long, although he's no L. Ron Hubbard)

BTW, what about having some of B5's writers do Star Trek? I wonder what that would produce...

Me of course, id love to get in on the paramount cash cow. Then after running it into the ground i'd sell it to George Lucas, who would subsequently make a film depecting the Galactic Empire's crushing of the Federation, with the real story being post-occupation resistance.

David Chase (The Sopranos) and JMS.. you cant honestly tell me that there would be a better pair than that!

To write the next Trek movie, I would pick Chirstopher McQuarrie. I
liked 'The Usual Suspects' and would enjoy seeing that type of suspense
and mystery in a Trek movie.

As for writing the rest of Enterprise, I have no idea.

I'd want to bring back everyone who did Star Trek 2, have them put the movie in the TOS movie era, and tell them to forget everything that ever happened in TNG+.

What about my suggestion of getting B5 writers to do Star Trek?? I know that B5 and ST are quite different (with the exception of Deep Space 9, which was a shameless B5 rip-off) - but B5 is generally better written than ST. (Then again, nearly anything is better written than recent Star Trek)

B5 was well writen for a sci-fi show, but doesn't compare all that favourably with some other TV-shows like The Sopranos, the first few seasons of X-Files, The West Wing and so on. Also B5 writers seemed to run out of ideas after "Into the Fire", the rest of season four and season five were pretty poor, not to mention some of the later movies (RoS and B5:LotR) and Crusade. I do have my special beef with B5 writers over their incessant love of pompous speeches and declarations, particulary a lot of Ivanova's lines.

I'd say that if you truly wan't quality, go with actual writers (novelists or what ever they should be called), you can always get people with experince in TV-show production to "televize" the sript. Banks would be my first choice, don't know how well they write sci-fi, but Clancy or Archer would be interresting as well.

Much of the varying quality of the fifth season of Babylon 5 is a direct result of the uncertainity around the series' funding. When they were filming the fourth season they were not sure if there would be another one, so they had to quickly wrap up the war against Clarke. They even filmed "Sleeping in Light", the final episode, during the fourth season and were going to use it as the season four finale if things did not work out. However, the infamous TNT bought the show. JMS as a writer has his shortfallings, but he is capable of making excellent story arcs.

@ Sirius

By Clancy do you mean Tom Clancy? Although the quality of his work has badly dropped since the days of Red Storm Rising and Without Remorse, it would be interesting to see how he would write Trek or other science fiction. He is a self-confessed fan of Star Trek after all.

Of course, sci-fi book writers will always be better than TV manuscript writers, and Iain Banks would indeed be a good choice as he's one of my favourite writers. However, I'm not sure whether he should do Enterprise, as it is less utopian than other Star Trek spin-offs.
but Clancy or Archer would be interresting as well.
Tom Clancy?? He'll be perfect for a show set during the Klingon/Federation civil war, or for that matter, any militarily oriented ST show! He'll definately make it more tactically and militarily sound. However, I don't think we should let him do too much as he doesn't appear to be much interested in sci-fi. But as a

If Banks and Clancy are unavailable, we'll do well with other accomplished sci-fi authors.

Just as a "What If" - if H.P. Lovecraft lived until the late 1960s and became a writer for Star Trek: TOS, what sort of episodes would we get? A planet populated by people with the Innsmouth Look? A mission to rid Pluto of winged giant lobsters with antennae for heads? An encounter with none other than Azathoth himself? We can only guess...

Yes, Clancy = Tom Clancy and Archer = Jefferey Archer.
Simon H.Johansen wrote:Isn't X-Files a sci-fi show as well??
Well I'd rate X-Files as a show about the paranormal, rather then as a "true" Sci-fi show. However that aside X-Files, unlike many other Sci-fi shows, took it self seriously and it did show in the quality of the first few seasons (it did get repetative leter on).

Mr. Wolf that used to write for Andromeda. The epps he's penned are by far the best ones of the latest season, and about the only reason Andromeda continues to hold my interest. Once his eps are finished, I have a sinking sensation that Andromeda will FULLY become Hercules in Space.

His writing is quite good IMHO, so aside from the others mentioned already, he might be a good writer to pick up, and likley for far cheaper than the others.

aren't there some "alien conspiracy" stuff in there, which at least is slightly sci-fi. The "paranormal" and sci-fi genres can also be closely entwined, as ewidenced by, for example, The Colour Out Of Space by H.P. Lovecraft, and some aspects of Warhammer 40K, notably that emphasized in the "Inquisitor" spinoff.

Clancy actually does like SF... *points to cover of Niven novel with blurb by Clancy*

David Weber might be nice to have write ST. Though if he did... it'd slow down the next Honorverse novel... Hmm...

I think he's actually a moderate fan. I've seen a few books that feature little blurbs of his. One of Weber's novels actually (after Weber is the sci-fi genre's Clancy) if I recal right.

I'd like to see him. But I'm hoping even more for the Honor Miniseries. So screw trek until that off the ground!

Authors and TV people I'd like to see write for Star Trek:

David Weber - arguabley one of the best out there. He rights a good yarn despite a few bad ones. In general one of the good ones.

Harlan Ellison - Produced probably the best Trek episode of any other writer. He's got the combination of lofty ideals and intimate personal characterization that Trek is sorely lacking. He'd probably kill B&B but that's no problem at all.

JMS - Another good sci-fi writer that's got the TV chops. He's got the skill and is an old school trekkie. I'd love to see what he could do.

Joss Whedon - Firefly was really good and I'd love to see what he could do with a sure thing like Trek. Definitly someobdy I'd like to see do trek.

But him writing for Trek would allow him to get into the TV business, and possibly allow him to get the miniseries started more easily...

They're already writing it and casting it or were some time ago. I'm wondering what the hold up is. I don't think it's entirely on Weber's end.

Tom Clancy novels tend to be a bit bloated, I think.

I KNOW!

Let's get Terry Goodkind! :P
