Sona = Dominion clone?

Post by Kurgan »

When I watched Insurrection again recently I took special note about how they talked about the Sona a bit at one point it the film and said how they manufacture the Ketracell White (now that I've seen DS9 I know these are the drugs the Founders use to keep the Jem Hadar loyal to them) and they have two slave races under their control (just like the Dominion) and control a small "empire" (previous unheard of in all of trek before the movie of course).

The Sona weren't shape shifters like the Founders, but they did have stretchy faces... they even looked somewhat like the "Odo" faced founders with their "smoothed out" humanoid features. And of course they were demonize at every opportunity...

Now given the fact that B&B seem to want to distance themselves from DS9, could it be that they were just a stand-in for the Dominion?

I also noticed how the plotline of First Contact closely mimicked "Best of Both Worlds" (the best TNG episode according to many).

One other tidbit... did anyone else notice that one of the "slave races" looked to be the same alien species as the Borg Queen in First Contact?

All this is not surprising - Insurrection was made at a time when the Star Trek writers had ran out of ideas.

THey manufacture KW because that is the most common ST drug and proboly helps them stay yong.

Controled a very small empire.

WTF would they want to distince themselves from DS9, I liked it.

At that time, all of the bad guys were related to the Dom. They are like the imbread cousin villian that wasn't cut out for the big leagues.

I don't think the Sona used ketracel white, but just had the ability to produce it. That is a largepart of why Starfleet was all buddy-buddy with them, so the Dominon would not be able to add them to their list of allies and white suppliers.

I assumed that they were pretty much like drug lords, making the ketracell white for the dominion to use, the dominion being the kingpin of the crime world.

Just think what the rest of the immortal Baku could have done had they not decided to reject technology?

In a way, the Baku on their "utopia world" of community bonding was not unlike the attitude of the Founders on their homeworld.

Isn't the Borg Queen supposed to be of a really obscure alien species??

Where did you hear that? I just thought she bore a strong resemblance to the aliens in Insurrection...

Then again, many alien species in Trek look identical (compare Humans and Betazoids for example), though leave it to the franchise producers to come up with ways to Westmore-ize them in later shows. ; p

Anyway, I was watching DS9 7x17 ("Penumbra") and in it Dumar (the Cardassian leader allied with the Dominion) mentioned how he thought the Sona were supposed to be defending a Ketracell White facility (but apparently they couldn't or wouldn't).

So far that's the only reference I recall from the show (I've been watching them in order, but I may have missed something).

I've always assumed the Baku were lying about having no high tech equipment, after all if this was true why didn't the Son'a just establish a vacation spa on the other side of the planet and come back every few years until they were young again. The Son'a must have had a ship after all they left in the first place. A friend is of the opinion that the Baku had an automated defense system to keep them safe, the Son'a knew it was there but not where or how to defeat it a century or two later the federation waltz's in the defences have broken down the Son'a rejoice but the federation owns the territory.
