Trekkie bashing commercial ::grin::

Post by kojikun »

There was this commercial on TV just now for a cable company or something.

Two nerdy guys are at a nice party, and sit down next to two attractive women. They try to pick the women up, and the women are clearly disinterested. One of the women changes the channel to Star Trek TOS and then you see the two guys sitting their, jaws agape, watching Kirk and Spock, the women are gone.

They were bashing all nerds there really, they just used trekkies as the patsies in that specific instance.

Come on, it's TOS. What self-respecting geek could resist?

I see no reason why star trek should be assosiated with nerdiness any more than any other sci-fi shows like star wars or babylon 5.

I could, never got into it myself. Now if it was bab5, and it was an episode i hadn't seen a million times then perhaps it would be different.

As for the other bit, star wars is more of an old story sort of thing...and babylon 5 has people you care about. Plus i never heard of people going to mental institutions and only speaking minbari or ewok.

That is a point. Only TOS makes people deranges psychotics. One too many mind melds, I think.

Very good point. Only trekkies push their hobbies too far and become disconneced from reality.

Should have phrased it better. 'What self-respecting geek who likes Star Trek in any capacity could resist?' C'mon, it's fricken' Kirk and Spock and McCoy! You can't get any better than that in Star Trek!

Have you not heard of the Everquest fanatic who went so far as to shit under his bed because it was closer than the fucking bathroom? Or perhaps the guy who killed another guy after losing to him in some computer game? Or... hey, ever heard of this little cult called Christianity?

I seriously hope you were being sarcastic, because that was really fucking stupid.

Yeah, how about not. You get crazy, crackheaded fanatics from almost every hobby/activity. In the case of this commercial, trekkies were used as they epitomize the "American nerd". SW freaks generally don't stick out as much since SW is more popular on a national/international basis. This makes them poor for commercials such as this.
