Fleet counts after the Dominion War

Post by HemlockGrey »

What are the strengths of the various Alpha Quadrant powers(plus the Dominion) after the end of the war? I've heard everything from 800 to 30,000.

I'm talking capital ships, by the way.

This one is rather difficult. We know that a couple weeks prior to the end of the war the combined Dominion Alliance had 30,000 ships. The FKR Alliance expected 40% losses to their remaining fleet assets when assaulting Cardassia and this is AFTER the Cardassians changed sides. I suspect the final BIG battle never really happened. The battle in the outer system of Cardassia was probably just a series of battlegroup skirmishes with the FKR Alliance testing the Dominion Alliance defenses. In that case, the total losses for the final attack on Cardassia are likely not as bad as they could be.

That said, I have no fucking idea what the fleet count is. The best I can say is that by the time of VGR End Game, the Excelsior and Miranda class ships have been almost completely phased out of service. In other words Starfleet is primarily using its more advanced ships by this time.

Excuse me? The Excelsior and Miranda are among the weakest of the Federation ships and they require more resources to maintain when smaller and cheaper ships can do the same thing. This of course ignores the Galaxy and Nebula class ships as well as the Defiant, Akira, and Prometheus class ships which the Federation is now producing in larger numbers.

You'd think the Lakota-type refits would be done extensively by now.

The only problem is this subtype requires the Excelsior Refit. That variant is very uncommon seeing as it was spotted only twice.

Thats rather rash, don't you think? We know that the Excelsior and Miranda vessels are not in use in high-traffic critical defense areas. They could very well be patrolling friendly borders or simply flying the flag throughout the Federation.

Possible, but unlikely. From the Voyager episode Relativity we get a nice look at the Utopia Plantia yards and there are a fair number of older ships there. The sudden lack of them in End Game is very noticable. Furthermore, these ships are older and have less range. Therefor they are more likely to be in core areas rather then out on the borders.

Seems to be the beginning of the end for the Federation jack off all trades ships like the Excelsior and the Miranda. And the introduction of more dedicated war ships like the Akira, Steamrunner, and Defiant can only be a good thing as far as the next level of Star Trek is concerned as long as Beavis & Butthead don't make it and Steven Behr(sp) does.

Even the humble Connie had a 5-year mission duration. Unless you mean to say that Excelsiors and the like are moving about at warp 5-6 max (which seems unlikely given their participation in the Dominion war), then they ought to have plenty of range to get out to the borders of the Federation.

If nothing else, the Federation had reached the Klingon and Romulan borders by the TOS era, so the Excelsiors could definately reach and patrol these fairly friendly borders.
