ST TMP questions

Couple of questions about this movie, which I've recently seen again:
  1. How the fuck could they make such a simple plot into such a long goddamned movie? Oh yeah, I forgot; endless slow-mo scenes of gratuitous fan FX wank and the crew staring in rapt wonderment at the viewscreen instead of doing their jobs. The director obviously likes 2001 an awful lot.
  2. Why didn't the Klingon warships in the beginning of the movie use warp drive to get out of there when they were in full retreat? Was V'ger creating an interdiction field?
  3. Where did the "82 AU" figure for V'ger's diameter come from? The Epsilon 9 space station reported its diameter as "over 2 AU", not 82 AU.
  4. Has anybody scaled the ship which we saw once the cloud dissipated? You can see it pretty clearly near the end of the movie as it approaches Earth.

could it have been a goof on one of the actors parts? the 82 AU comment?

then that goof would be canon :P

Incidentally, I've never seen TMP

That's not a question, it's a statement of fact. 8)

But really, if you're gonna subject yourself to those awful uniforms, boring directing, and the guy from 7th Heaven in love with a really freaky looking bald chick ... shouldn't you be posting your Nemesis analysis? :P

I do plan to watch Nemesis soon, so I'm watching a few of the crappier Trek films in preparation, much as a snake trainer deliberately allows himself to be injected with small doses of venom in order to build up resistance before subjecting himself to a potentially fatal dose.

Well, over 2 does kind of sound like 82 if you say it fast enough with a slurred voice.

If you were being sarcastic, then LOL! But otherwise, here's your answers, these are not BS in fact:

Yes. It was a plot taken from the pilot of the ill-fated "Star Trek Phase II" series that Roddenberry planned after TOS was cancelled, but he later scrapped the idea in favor of expanding it into a feature film. There have been a few books published about this. Interesting stuff...

So yeah, lots of filler!
Why didn't the Klingon warships in the beginning of the movie use warp drive to get out of there when they were in full retreat? Was V'ger creating an interdiction field?
Possibly, or pilot error (stupidity). Dramatically it was done to show that V'ger was "not to be messed with."
Where did the "82 AU" figure for V'ger's diameter come from? The Epsilon 9 space station reported its diameter as "over 2 AU", not 82 AU.
That line is from the original (non-special edition) version of the film. The SE changed it to the much smaller figure. They also changed the shot of Vulcan's "moon" in the sky to a different sky with no moon visible (so it avoids contradicting Spock's statement about Vulcan having no moon).

'Fraid I haven't, that's about all I can say. ; )

"Nemesis" won't put you to sleep, at least :) That's its main problem: there's WAY too much meaningless action, not enough introspection. By contrast, TMP looks like it's standing still.

That said, I did think the reworked effects were really pretty. I enjoyed watching the new or redone scenes, and I always enjoy watching the Klingon battlecruiser sequence. Whoever built that filming mini put a LOT of work into it...it's just beautiful to behold, almost in spite of itself, with all those ugly lines and washed-out coloration.

I don't think V'ger was putting up an interdiction field.

More then likely, it was
1)- Klingon bravo
2)- Tractor Beam from V'ger
3)- It took a bit for Klingon ships of that era to power up to warp speed

4)- Scriptwriters stupidity

This scene, was the reason I bought the video. Great atmosphere especially with the music. The rest of the movie is rather disappointing though, but there are worse (ST III)

Wasn't it the debut of the classic Klingon music (also great in Star Trek III)?

Yep. Still One of my favorite themes, and that scene was also one of the few instances where ST ships actually look intimidating.

As I mentioned in the hacked section, in the book, (and thus the original story) the klingons don't have time to flee before they try to flee. It's also possible that they had their engine power removed by Vejur,
"'Captain..' it was Chekov at the weapons staion 'all earth defences have just gone inoprative!'

Chekov's words seemed to echoaround the bridge and kirk felt a stab of cold in his stomach.

'Confirm,' said Uhura, her voice shaking. 'I'm monitoring reports of forcefield power loss, computers shutting themselves down...'

[...]

'Captain,' said Uhura, 'even starfleet's tranciever signals are fading.'
It can shut down earth (even sheileded items) thus a few klingon warp drives would pose no problem.

How silly of me to miss this, but check out:

78Km in length (novellisation). The scaling on that site is off.

Despite its rather slow feeling throughout the movie, I though it was pretty good. I LOATHED the 10 minute Travel pod scene to the Enterprise.

10 minutes of no dialouge and Kirk staring at the Enterprise with an expression on his face that looked like he was on the verge of orgasm!

Anyway,

2. Klingons arent the brightest bulbs. Or, V'Ger's cloud disrupted Warp Engines. No reason to think this wasnt true.

PS: I am new here, nice place.:)

Perhaps V'gr's cloud utilized some sort of sub-space disruption?

After all, we know that Treknology is heavily sub-space dependent...

Indeed it is.

Well, a massive energy cloud that can vaporise Klingon Warships in one shot can probably disrupt warp fields if it wanted to.

Actually, if you give III another listen, you can hear that for once in his career, Horner doesn't rip off Goldsmith ... his Klingon theme in III is only vaguely similar in terms of orchestration, but it doesn't use the same melody at all, and it ain't nowhere near as good.

Now Ron Jones did a good job of hitting on the Goldsmith themes (both main TMP and klingon) during some first year nextgens, but you don't hear Goldsmith's klingon theme in the flicks until he comes back for ST5.

The energy cloud looks like it must have been some kind of illusion, like an animal which tries to look bigger than it is. It dissipated with no trace, after all. The real ship is only 78km long according to the novelization, assuming Necronlord remembers it correctly.

Anyway, it doesn't actually seem to vapourize them; it just makes them vanish, almost as if it's using some kind of transporter-like system. But if Worf can keep a bunch of JH ships out of warp in DS9, I see no reason why V'Ger can't. If V'Ger used a tractor beam or shut down their power systems I don't see why they'd be able to fly away at all.
