Do you like this map of the Star Trek galaxy?

It's good, and detailed, though it's own self contradiction in the undoing. Eg: The border between Klingon and Romulan space is supposed to be near Federation space.

Huh? In this map the Klingon-Romulan border starts near Starbase 24, I think that's pretty close to Fed space.

Both the Klingons and Romulans are supposed to have a border with the Cardassians.

One error: Isn't the Klingon Empire supposed also to have holding in the Alpha Quadrant

Maybe the Federation is "higher" or "lower" in the galaxy than they are?

Using that map it is pretty hard for the Klingons to go to war with the Cardassians.

The Ferengi "empire" for lack of a better word sure seems small.

Finally the Cardassion Union seems larger than it should be.

2D maps fail to display the complexity of a real 3D galaxy, and as such any attempt to make a 2D map of a 3D object is severly flawed.

Tho the 3D nature of the galaxy can explain any manner of problems we can find when it comes to borders.

Make two more maps
First map: 'Higher up" from Earth
Second map: Lower then earth

And say that one is at Earth level, where the UFP is the widest for some reason

The problem with the map is that it is 2 dimensional. The borders are all supposed to appear in three dimensions. The Klingons and Romulans are both supposed to have borders with the Cardassian Empire, Romulus and Remus are too far apart (seeing as how they orbit the same star), and appear only SLIGHTLY closer to each other than Bajor and Cardassia!

I think that Bajor is too close to the heart of the Cardassian Empire, and that the Cardassians are too large overall. The Cardassians were only supposed to be a smaller threat, in the grand scheme of things (certainly nowhere near as powerful as, say, the Romulans), and were supposed to be comparable to the Breen, and perhaps even weaker. The map over-states their territorial holdings.

How come the first meeting with the Ferengi was on the other side of the sector?

That struck me as being very strange, particularly since the Ferengi ship involved would have had to have moved clear ACROSS the UFP in order to get there. Now, the mercantile trade of the Ferengi would scatter them for some distance across the Galaxy, so I can see a Ferengi ship being that far from home, but I don't think that a Ferengi ship could move through the UFP without making contact with anyone there.

For those curious; this is the site were I got it. You may also want to go here. Unfortunately, it's all in German...

It's nice to see that it's not just another Trekkie wankfest that has the Federation taking up 90% of the entire galaxy, while all the other "empires" of the various species are less than twenty lightyears across each...

Then use the English version here and here.

Doesn't Graham Kennedy have a TOS era map up somewhere at his site?

Yep, but it's based purely upon speculation. And he admits this.

I meant a screencap from the show, I know I've seen it somewhere...
