Something just occured to me about Trills.

Why the fuck are they demoted when they change hosts!?
They seem to assume the duties and rank of the new host.
If they have all the experiences and memories of previous hosts shouldn't they be allowed to choose their new rank and position?(if required after a qualifying process)
Why did Ezri suddenly become a counseler? It seemed to me that Jadzia's skills would be a lot more usefull on DS9 because of the *ahem* war *ahem*.
Does starfleet evaluate skills and people on outward appearance?

I think it depend on the host, remember one of Dax`s host was a dancer another was a psycho killer,so if a young Trill gets promoted to a higher rank due to the symbiote knowledge, every other starfleet personel would be pissed.

Also, the Trill aren't like the Goa'uld; the symbiote does not take over the host's body. The minds and personalities of the Trill symbiote and host blend to become a unique person. Jadzia Dax was neither the humanoid Jadzia nor the symbiote Dax, but a merging of the two. So even though Ezri Dax had many lifetimes of experience in many fields, she still had many of the interests and ambitions of Ezri.

Ezri has Jadzia's memories, but not her skills. It would be as if she'd just read a very detailed book about how to do Jadzia's job, but had no hands-on experience with it.

What about that one trill(forget name) who was serving as an ambasador and it was obvious that every incarnation of him still did the same job?

From TNG? The one that took over Riker for awhile?

The TNG Trill were quite different from DS9 Trills. Eg. they took over the hosts body totaly, much like the Goa'uld do and the Trill hosts looked different.

It should also be mentioned that one of Dax's former hosts was, of course, a certain well-to-do ambassador. The Dax symbiont clearly has considerable skills for being a counselor, although I agree with you that it seems that the Starfleet HR Department screwed up and wasted her talents.

Curzon?
And I don't know about Starfleet wasting her talent. Ezri was rather unprepared when she became a host. I doubt she could have handled a high level position straight off. She did come close to quitting after all.

While Ezri was clearly unprepared, she seemed to adjust pretty quickly, and the Dax symbiont has done plenty in the past. At the very least they could have promoted her more rapidly than they did.

If I recall my Relaunch books corectly, Ezri jumped from ensign to full lieutennant and first-officer of the Defiant within eighteen months or so.

It's been suggested that there are two species of Trill hosts to explain for the contradiction, which actually works a bit better than the idea of there being two species of Klingons--there's no discontinuities like Kor popping up.
