Anyone else notice the Prime Directive violation?

So they fly down to a "pre industrial" society's planet to find the pieces of B-4. Before you know it, the residents of this planet drive up in their dune buggies and attack the away team. So what do the Feddies do? They open fire with phasers and fly their ship over the fight. Keep in mind that the people on this planet are supposed to be much less advanced, so therefore the Prime Directive would be in order.

I realize that their lives were at stake, but one would think they would have taken better precautions. Remember the good old days of duck blinds and cloaking suits? Now they take their ships down and shoot with phasers?

Admiral Janeway is going to be pissed.

Their shuttlecraft would have been spotted for miles around on its descent. They exposed themselves and examples of their more advanced technology, and their shuttlecraft lofted back to orbit in full view of the natives. Just so that he could tool around in his cool new dune buggy, Picard pissed all over the Prime Directive in ways that even James Kirk was never guilty of.

They would have drawn far less attention to their presence had Picard simply put down two-man teams in the general area of each B4 componnent. As it was, the landing party couldn't have drawn more attention to themselves if they had planned to do so.

I'm concerned that there was nobody on board the ship watching over them.

"Um Captain, you've got several locals approaching your position. ETA 2 minutes."

From there, you take off in the Argo (shuttle), move to the next position, and gather the next piece.

BTW, they could have really improved that desert scene with $100.00 of special effect equipment, plus a few filters for the camera, and computer effects.

1) Since it is a desert scene, give everyone some goggles! Anything to keep the light fom blinding the people working down there. Geordi would have been the best choice to go down to the planet, if his artifical eyes are just as good as the VISOR.

2) Have the audience view the scene from the same image as a person. It would remove the glare, and add extra definition where appropriate.

3) Have a few symbols on the screen, showing what the person would be seeing.

Or simply but a mild filter on the camera. That thing was hard to look at in a theater, and will be difficult to see on televisions.

Everyone fucking forgets the damn ion storm that was screwing with
the transporters....(or was that just in the shooting script?)

How about

Maybe even let them wear something a little bit more protective than Oakley sports goggles.

I wasn't sure if they were on an away team or going to a game of Racquetball

Nobody's forgotten. The whole "ion storm" business was an all-too obvious plot device to "justify" the entire stupid dune buggy chase sequence.

And the more logical course of action would have been to wait until the ion storm threat had subsided so that they could use transporters. It was just bad jugement on Picard's part and a stupid waste of movie time.

Maybe they wanted to get to Romulus as fast as possible, so didn't wait for the storm to pass up.

If they wanted to get to Romulus as soon as possible then they wouldn't be stopping just to pick up what they think is an android.

They were not sent to Romulus until after the picked up B-4.

What if the planet already had contact with warp capable races, thus they already knew about aliens for other planets?

That's pure speculation. Nothing in the movie suggests that.

Sith, that's what I was thinking. Perhaps they have already been exposed to warp capable races. This might even explain why they immediately attacked the away team. Maybe, like the Sand People on Star Wars, they attack aliens and steal whatever they can.

If this is the case, I wonder who they were first exposed to. Maybe the Klingons went down there and picked a fight, so now the aliens are really mad.

Actually, the movie DOES support it. We know that Picard holds certain principles to high regard and one of them is the Prime Directive. Yet he still heads down to the planet. So that seems to indicate the planet has had some sort of contact with Warp Capable people in the past, and they might even have some sort of trade deals or something. Either way, we know Picard went down there and there is no strict evidence that says Picard was breaking a Directive that he has held important in the past. This alone indicates that Picard likely did NOT break the Prime Directive.

Others have already covered this, but I would like to add that it is not at all speculation.

Picard holds the Prime Directive in very high regard.

The crew of the E-E, especially Data, hold the Prime Directive in very high regard.

I would be surprised to find a warp-capable race within UFP territory whose planet had not been charted and who was near the Neutral Zone but had never been mentioned before. On the other hand, I would have been astonished to see half the things I saw in "Nemesis." It is known that, in some cases, it is impossible to uphold the Prime Directive. In this case, Picard was faced with either going back to try to placate some aliens that began firing on him with a light machine gun the minute they saw the E-E's crew (NTM abandon what is perhaps the only chance for peace with the new RSE ruler), or to fulfill his duty and go to Romulus. If I were him, no matter how highly I thought of the Prime Directive, I would have turned tail and run to the Romulan capital.

Actually, what you are saying is pure speculation. You are speculating that they must have had some contact before hand to justify Picards clear breach of the Prime Directive. And until you pony up some evidence, it will remain flimsy speculation and rationalization.

I'm not saying that is the exact reason why, all I am saying is that for some reason or another that race is not considered to be under the protection of that part of the PD. I mean come on..........Picard honors the PD until this one day he and his entire crew decide to say fuck it.

Maybe since there were parts of Soong type android Picard came to the conclusion that they had contact with warp capable races.

Oh boy, that's saying something about the Klingons if they can't capture that little planet.

Maybe

It's possible that the race had some previous contact.

But since on screen the crew even stated that it was an unexplored uncharted system.

So they new just about bum diddly about what might have happened on the planet.

They ignored the prime directive. Just like they ignored alot of things in the movie.

Don't think of it as Trek, not even a Trek-wannabe, just think of it as a hilarious spoof of what Trek is when the writers are all on crack
