WTF was that all about? It looked like a random spray of disrupter fire across the saucer section to me.

Maybe the randomness is the trick? Or more professionally, an "unstructured attack profile?"

if you look closely the areas hit were all along the phasor arrays. shinzon wanted the enterprise disabled so he could have picard. that method of attack is also why the E-E was down to 4% phasor strength by the end of the battle.
