I remember reading the FAQ of this site where Mike was asking why they would choose a woman with such a smoker's voice in a period where no one smokes anymore. I didn't think she was a smoker- I thought she was English.

English accent? You can't be serious...

Yeah, an English accent has the speaker using the neutral pronunciations of the central US.

No offence but man, that almost makes my brain hurt...

Yes, I was serious, I thought she was English, I looked her up on IMDB, she was born in Iowa or something. Neutral pronounciations? You mean saying of the central US, like how they call soda "pop?" Stuff like that? as for Mike saying why they used her, I don't think they could refuse her if she was the best canididate(sp?) that would be discrimination.

Wanna hear what her voice used to sound like? Just watch Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins. 8)

The best candidate for a character in a non-smoking world is obviously not a smoker. That is not unlawful discrimination, any more than it's unlawful discrimination to hire a black guy to play Martin Luther King. If you're making TV shows or movies, you need people who physically fit the profile.

Discrimination itself is not necessarily bad; for example, we discriminate against stupid people when hiring nuclear power plant operators (Homer Simpson notwithstanding). Discrimination is bad when it's unjustified, ie- refusing to promote women to positions of authority even if they're qualified.

A job in Hollywood has specific requirements for physical presentation, because that's simply the nature of the job. It is not unreasonable, therefore, to discriminate on the basis of physical characteristics for those particular kinds of jobs. Do we attack the WWE because they reject puny 120-lb wrestlers? It's the nature of the business.

I thought she was a man in a wig.

I thought she was a man in a wig.
Now that is cruel, there is no reason for you to insult the crossdressers of this world.

True...so any idea of how many packs a day Mulgrew goes through?

I mean honestly her voice actually has a different sound from first season to last one.

It's just horrifying; a woman should have a silky voice, not a gravelly one.

Could be worse. She could sound like Fran Drescher, accent and all. (Shudders)

Fran Drescher's a decent looking woman too, but that voice... it's conjured up from the foulest pit of hell.

I'd still take it over Kate Mulgrew's gavelly rumble. At least Fran's voice is feminine.
