What does a deflector dish DO?

Frankly, I don't have a real big problem with the concept of a deflector. I don't like the Swiss-army-knife it has become, but its less objectionable than a lot of things.

Swiss army knifes are nice but their tools are all smaller than the dedicated versions of the devices. I agree that the deflector has become way too inundated with technobabble.

Perhaps the dish has some kind of cultish meaning for the feds, like the eyes the Greeks and Romans painted on the prows of their ships.
