Fortunately, the crew had gone into battle with a contingency plan. At that time Budapest had been one of five test-bed starships for a new offensive hand weapon, one radically different from phasers and designed to be used specifically in situations when particle-beam weapons were useless: the TR-116. Esssentially a rifle that fired chemically propelled metal projectiles, the TR-116 was immune to the adaptive beam shields that made Borg drones able to withstand phaser attacks. With Bowers leading an assault team armed with the prototype weapons through the ship, bullets from the TR-116 tore through drone boddies like paper. The Borg never knew what hit them.
The book also shows similar evidence of a Borg ship having originally been a Federation vessel that was assimilated. Although, it's apparent only under close inspection from inside the wreckage (it was found on a planet in the Gamma quadrant).

Finished the book. Let's just say that is answers alot of the types of question that routinely come up in Star Trek debates. I'd feel pretty safe saying that the author of this book appears to have considered, in one way or another, many of the things that routinely pop up on Trek related boards.
Other books in the series of 4 are better but this one answers a lot of questions and sets up a lot of things for further books.

I know. I mainly thought it was interesting that one of the Trek writers appears to be thinking about a lot of the things mentioned on this board.
Including: Why have the Borg ever only sent one ship? Whay did they do the time travel thing? Can the Borg assimilate one of the Founders? Plus the stuff I mentioned in the earlier post.
Certainly if it suits there purpose B/B or someone else will crap all over the stuff from this book but it was nice to see that someone envolved with Trek was seriously considering some of these questions.
By the way, this 4 part series was pretty good except for the 4th book which was kind of lame story wise compared to the others. It would have probably made a good episode because of all the visual stuff but it wasn't that good as a book.

ST writers for the books tend to be reasonably intelligent, and so they will almost certainly draw similar conclusions to the board when they are writing with the same information that we have. Problems arise when they do otherwise, because the board tends to come to the best possible conclusion, and these problems are frequently caused by either writer stupidity or a writer who lacks the proper information.
