Star Wars: Practical solution to everything. They get their hands dirty when necessary, and are able to directly work with the innards of their ships (see Han Solo and the Falcon). Everything looks militaristic and PRACTICAL, rather than flashy and techy.
Good point. I've seen several Trekkies argue that Wars was lower tech with one of the main examples being that they use blast doors instead of forcefields.
Exactly. Yet the blast doors are more practical. If the ship has been damaged and vacuum is seeping in, then they're likely losing power. Therefore, a blast door is much more practical because you can close it and leave it closed, while if you raise a force field, if the ship loses power you're history.
The most practical method would of course be to have both; a forcefield that immediately switches on, and then turns off when the door closes behind it, sealing off whatever is needed to be sealed off.
Then again, no one's ever bothered to be that redundant.

SW does have force fields at the entry points but it makes more sense to have blast doors on the interior for the reasons quoted before. I think a lot of trekkies feek they are right and thats all they need. The problem is ST cant keep to cannon even if they tried and they dont! Thats something I have to give ST a big nod for at least they try.
This "mass ignorance" is a direct result of popular ignorance of science and engineering. Those who have experience or training in the fields shake their heads at the pseudoscience, but those who don't tend to eat it up and think it makes Rick Berman's shit smell good.
It's a hell of a lot easier to buy into style over substance when you don't know what substance looks like.
