'Enterprise': Plagiarism or Parody?

Post by Raoul Duke, Jr. »

It occurred to me this morning that 'Enterprise' is really more a parody of TOS than anything else... am I the only one? Or is 'Enterprise' something worse? I hope I'll be forvigen if this subject has been touched before here, but I haven't seen this question raised, and it's really bugging me. What your take on it?

I doubt that it is a parody. That required actually knowing about TOS. B&B on the other hand, don't. They probably just learned a bit from working on TNG and did their own thing. Which is basically taking stuff from other places like TNG and doing it in their series. It is all over the place. Like the transporter malfunction phase crewman/woman imagined dead episode.

I hope it's plaigirism so B&B can be sued, and Enterprise deleted. I'm sure most of the stuff is a result of the sheer unorigionality of B&B.

If it were a parody, it would have witty jokes and familiar lines to remind us of TOS. I think most people here will agree that nothing about ENT is witty.

It's plagerism, and bad, cut-and-paste plagerism at that.

Plus if it was a parody, every episode would end with one of the crew members being chased by the rest of the crew with Porthos in the back a'la Benny Hill

calling it a parody would be a compliment. I like calling it a disaster would be a better fit.

Last night's episode was B-A-D, bad. Connor Trinear put in a good acting effort but most of that episode was total crap. The situation with him and the "snooty queen" was predictable and the "interogation" scene was ridiculous. Some of the made up crap by Archer during that scene was amusing but that anyone would buy it...? :?

I did like that Archer called Lt. Reed as soon as he couldn't get in touch with Trip but most of that episode made me feel like I was watching a crappy Voyager episode again.

When Trip and the chick all of a sudden lock lips I thought I was watching a sit-com doing a parody of such scenes. It was such a cliche, not a Trek cliche just a cliche in general.

When they had the chick tear her dress to get into the escape pod and she ended up showing a lot of leg I thought to myself, "Okay, they said they were going to 'sex' the show up a bit. Gee they did that fast". Wrong, the show was not sexed up unless you like seeing Trip in his underwear or without his shirt.

The only thing that might have saved this episode for me were if it were given the Scinemax treatment.

A parody requires humorous intent. Enterprise takes itself astonishingly seriously for a show that gives us numerous incidents of bathroom humor. Thus, it fails as a parody.

Perhaps in the eyes of many here, Enterprise could save itself by the last episode being a temporal event where the entire crew must sacrifice their lives and ship to stop something to do with the "temproal war" mentioned here and there. The result is the total oblivion of Enterprise and her crew, throughout the timeline in order to save the future that we all originally saw. Ties up any inconsistency problems, and maybe even moves a few to feel some sympathy for a crew and ship that never existed, but saved the future anyhow...that's what I'd do with it anyhow. I never watch Enterprise anyhow...

There's no point anymore trying to think of ways that ENT could be saved... B&B have done a pretty thorough job of butt-raping Trek into a total lack of hope for recovery. The only thing they can do now to redeem it in any way at all is to write in TOS as having been a television series that inspired the development of Trek-style tech and the naming of these aliens that just happen to visually resemble Trek aliens. Even that would be pretty far-fetched, and they'd never do it anyway.
