The First Trektard
Just out of curiosity... does anyone know who came up with the term?
To whom was it first applied?
Or is it just one of those things...

fun/fantasy movies existed before the overrated Star Wars came out. What made it seem 'less dark' was the sheer goofy aspect of it: two robots modeled on Laurel & Hardy, and a smartass outlaw with bigfoot co-pilot and their hotrod pizza-shaped ship, and they were sucked aboard a giant Disco Ball. -adw1
Someone asked me yesterday if Dracula met Saruman and there was a fight, who would win. I just looked at this man. What an idiotic thing to say. I mean really, it was half-witted. - Christopher Lee

your best bet is to found out when "Retard" came into cmmon use as an insult, as "Trektard" prolly came in someone time after that,
Praying is another way of doing nothing helpful

Really? I got the feeling that awhile back people who saw Star Trek were assumed to be smart or geeky, so I dont see how someone would call a Trekkie a retard, and then combine those two words.Crossroads Inc. wrote:your best bet is to found out when "Retard" came into cmmon use as an insult, as "Trektard" prolly came in someone time after that,
I figure it appeared around the time the whole SW vs ST thing came about?

Retardation is a form of mental disability, it could be the term came to use as to refer to someone who is 'socially disabled' by their being a fan of Star Trek, like the stereotypical nerd who has a hard time functioning socially and makes all kinds of references to Star Trek.

Still, somebody had to be the first to concatenate the two terms, even if you could say it was an obvious concatenation in hindsight. Unfortunately, it may be difficult or impossible to track that incident down.
It's like "Republitard". I think I popularized that term on this forum because I don't recall seeing anyone else use it here before I made it up, but it's a sufficiently obvious concatenation that it could have easily been invented independently by many, many people around the world. It may be impossible to determine who made it up first.

Is there a way to access the old debate archives on USENET? Perhaps we could see if people were using it back then...
I remember when I was in elementary school "retard" (pronounced "rea-tard") was used as a playground insult, that was in the 1980's. I don't recall ever hearing the term "Trekkie" until I was in Jr. High. I never heard the term "Trektard" until I joined this forum.
PS: Wong's post above is the first time I've seen 'Republitard.'

The First Trektard and his origins have been lost in the mists of time. Though some claim that he must have been the product of Unintelligent Design.

Huh, I would have bet it would be older, dating back to the SB war, Paul Jacques, or even Timothy JonesLord Poe wrote:Ok, unless someone finds an earlier reference, I'm calling it. Mar 5 2001, from HERE. Our own Rob Dalton:
