The ST vs. SW mod for ST: Armada

Post by Alferd Packer »

Has anyone played this mod? If so, what did you think of it? Personally, I thought it was remarkably well-balanced. Obviously if it were "true to life" the Empire and Rebels would wipe the floor with the Klingons and Federation.

The only qualms I have with it are the made-up Feddy and Klingon ships they put in the game. I did, however, really enjoy the large scale upon which things take place. Nothing more fun then having 800 assorted ships, from TIE Interceptors to Akira-class starships to Negh'Var battleships to MC-90 cruisers all the way up to an SSD, rip into each other.

I've play it, I though it was very well done and fun.

That was the only thing wrong with it...well any game for that matter. Ceretain races are stripped of fearsome capabilities...:D

Mostly agree, though I still don't hold the opinion a Federation GCS could unload all it's weapons a ISD and not damage or destroy it.

It's actually funny, I myself made a mod for STA. It was a Borg mod that drastically increased the size and firepower of cubes, other ships and bases. One cude would need a enemy fleet eight cap ships to win hands down, it could defeat up to four or five. Other improvements were made, such as upgrading the defiant.

Anyhow, I through my unaltered mod together with the STvsSW mod to see what would happen. The Borg cubes actually were able to destroy a ISD no sweat, but only because of their edited shield recharge was so high(that's what made them tough in the first place).

The standard Borg cubes in that game are also well-balanced. You don't necessarily need the biggest ships to take them out, just sustained firepower. I also enjoy how the larger ships can fire on multiple targets, so an ISD can rip a squadron of fighters to shreds in a few volleys.

A thing I didn't like:

In the original Armada, I loved suicide runs. I'd send ships to take out everything they could. Except when I sent ISDs, they came home alive :D

That, and they're SO FREAKING SLOW. God, it takes FOREVER to get an Empire/Rebel fleet to your enemy's base. Most of the times, the maps are too big so you can't jump from one base to another in a single run. It's a big strategic disadvantage if you jump from your base and fall short, because a Feddy fleet can just scoot on by and wreck your base while you're waiting for your hyperdrives to recharge. I learned THAT lesson the hard way.

I asked the designers about that. It was because SW ships are so frickin' powerful and hyperdrive.

Hmmmm....

Sounds like they went from 1 extreme (hyperdrive being overpowering) to the other (hyperdrive sucking monkey nuts compared to warp drive)...
