Yes, but they're also very, very tough.

It probably comes down to a question of terrain and the individual Gorn and Wookies combat training etc.

I'd have to say it is a 50:50 fight.

Gorn are reptiles, which generally makes them slower, but alot tougher then mammals (i.e Wookies)

Both are incredibly strong.

Best break down
Gorn vs Wookie
Strength: Probably even. Get me a few of each to experiment on, and I'll tell ya which is stronger.
Speed and Agility: Wookie wins
Toughness: Gorn wins
Natural Weapons: Gorn wins (let's not forget those big ass mouths, possibly poison as well, they are reptiles after all) (Did the Gorn have a tail? If so, that might be usable as a weapon in a brawl)
Aggression: Wookie wins

The gorn is much stronger than a wookie. I think that wookies are over estimated alot of the time due to everyones love of Chewbacca and wanting him to be unbeatable.

Damn it. Accidentally hit submit button early.

The Gorn takes this match up.

These are not the best pictures but I think they get the point across.

The rock I assume the Gorn later threw:

A Wookie has little chance of hurting it in a hand to hand only fight, the same does not apply to the Gorn. The Gorn wins.

Also temprature plays a part too.

If it's hot+moist the Gorn has an advantage. If it's taking place on Hoth the Wookie wins by default.

Odd coincidence.
I am watching "the arena" right now.

The rock the Gorn throws at Kirk is a minimum of 1 meter in diameter.(I say bigger, cause the gorn couldn't get his arms around it further.) He then survives a rock more than 1.5 meters falling more than 10 meters.
It stuns him, but most mammals would be a bloody sack of skin at this point. He wasn't cut, showing increadably tough thick skin. That is why the gorn are slow. Lion claws pentrate rhino skin, but not far.
Reptiles are every bit as fast as mammals when at the right temperature.

The wookie is most likely to lose due to overconfidence, believing he is the stronger of the two. A tail would be a good leverage point in in a wrestling match. Very hard to get a gorn on their back, and gripping from the back leaves the tail to fight with, even if the arms and legs won't articulate properly.A bear hug from behind doesn't render you almost helpless the war us tailless ones are.
Hmmmmmm.

Big deal. It took a frigging moon dropped on Chewbacca to finish him off :D :D :D (and if any of you took that seriously, you're going to end up bent over and bare-assed in a RayCav fic)

Seriously, don't we still need to establish some canon or official precedents for Wookiee strength BEFORE we start arguing this?

Also if someone can get me a vid clip or screenshots of the Gorn scene, I suppose I co uld try scaling it.

If the Gorns are really slow, would they be able to move their tails quickly enough to be useful?

I dunno how much this might help or not, but I just recalled:

What about Return of the Jedi? Isn't Chewbacca holding onto Han's legs while he attempts to rescue Lando? And doesn't he pull them both up after Lando is saved from the Sarlacc?

Just to clear something up for everybody, the Gorn don't appear to have tails, if they do they're apparently too small to be used as weapons.

Also a pic of the rock that the Gorn threw:

Is it jsut me or does it look like kirk is trying to launch himself at the gorns nuts in the first pick.
To get an idea how tough the Gorn is, a RSK made bazooka couldn't kill him. With the character shields on that man that could have downed a star destroyer, or blown up the Death Star. (its a joke)
Wookies may be very, very strong, but they don't have the necessary brute strength to damage a Gorn.
As for the tearing Ties apart, that can be misleading, if it is just ripping it apart at the seems then it isn't that hard, hell 120 pound weaklings on pcp have been known to tear car doors off there hinges and that isn't "megastrengthed".

I have seen "Arena" many times, and I really don't see how a Wookie is going to take a Gorn in a hand to hand combat situation.

I would suggest everyone watch "Arena" again to see what I mean.

More of a cannon really. With sharp diamond projectiles.

Wow, are you saying the Gorn was shot? With a bazooka-like thing...and didn't die!?! Yeah, Gorn takes it  If I understand this right then I doubt a Wookie can hurt a Gorn seriously even if it stood there waiting!

Kirk gets a tube thing, makes some gunpowder, uses sharp diamonds for projectiles and shoots him in the chest. He is knocked over and stunned, but otherwise unharmed.

It was more like an improvised blackpowder cannon built in to a hollow extra-thick bamboo stalk and firing diamonds. The Gorn got knocked out, but it didn't seem to be seriuosly injured (no wounds were visible IIRC).

There is nothing in the movies to suggest that a Wookie would be anywhere near as strong as a Gorn or as tough, surviving that rock Kirk dropped on it is just insane. I can't remember anything from the EU either.

And about ripping TIEs apart... Eh, either TIE fighters are built out of decidedly sub-standard materials for SW fighters or Chewbacca wrestles with the likes of the Hulk and the Thing. If such a thing has indeed happened in the EU I think we've seen SW EU hit a new low.

Ok, that settles it for me. These guys will never be assimilated by the Borg I would say, let alone fall to a Wookie one on one :D

I would like to see the Gorn again myself. Prehaps ST: Ent could feature the Gorn, providing the rumours Kirk talked about.
