Didn't V'Ger have images of Vader and Miss Piggy? Those were probably
removed or obscured in the director's edition.

Still, I don't get it...V'Ger supposedly popped out near a "machine
planet" somewhere around the opposite side of the Milky Way
galaxy. Even if it fell far into the past--say, onto one of the
first Borg planets--why would it be so stupid as to go to various
other galaxies before it found its way back to Earth? Surely
the telemetry of the mindless probe was retained, which would
provide a very clear indication of the probe's origin. Why launch
off to Andromeda etc. when you could travel less than 100,000 ly
to meet your "creator"?

V'Ger's abilities are really an unknown...and again, it depends on which
film on which you base its characteristics. In the original edition,
it had that 82 AU energy field; but in the director's ed., that was "only"
2 AU.

Which is it?

I think it would be good to go with the Director's Edition, as it's more recent and also fixes several other problems with the original version of the film.

If I remember correctley, V'Ger took the long way home because it's original Earth programming told it to gather all information possible and send it to it's creators.

Again, I know that isn't canon but I'm just saying the writer himself gives us the possibility that all of V'Ger's digitising wasn't destructive.

The machine race that constructed (most of) V'Ger is clearly far more advanced than the Borg.
