I wish you luck, HBMC, but I am not sure what one person, even if he is a moderator, can do against a forum. The quality of discussion there is generally so low, in spite of a few exceptional individuals, that I really see no point in continuing to attempt to engage them rationally. Just don't let DumbShit spin-doctor everything about what happened here.

Then ban E1701 and co.
It'll clear out the VS forum pretty quick by banning, then the true debates can continue unabated.

Yeah, banning people will surely cause these elusive 'true debates' to continue unabated... [/u]Then ban E1701 and co.

Just a thought .... if banning folks from this forum becomes a recurring theme, then clearly identified standards for such action should be made readily known to all as a precurser for joining this forum -- like an addition to the acceptance of terms that all must check -- banning standards in bold.

Since this is SB.com we're talking about, they both are.Master of Ossus wrote:And Alyeska wonders why I hate SB.com so much. Almost half of the people there are complete idiots. Look at the thread! How can anyone honestly think that DarkStar makes better points than Darth Wong?

True, I doubt banning them will help, it's not the presence of the ones who contribute nothing thats the problem, it's the lack of the people who do, and when Evil S'tan, Painrack and so on dissapeared, the peanut gallery took over by force of numbers and "volume".Dead on Arrival wrote:Yeah, banning people will surely cause these elusive 'true debates' to continue unabated...Then ban E1701 and co.

It's essentially a lost cause and I think the vs. debates should be NUKED and vs. debating banned forever from SB.

It has nothing to do with the people, it has everything to do with the fact anything worth debating has been done in some form or another. There are only so many times one can debate Omega vs GCS, or my personal favorite B5 Maint Bot vs Death Star.

There is a difference between berating and hazing.Master of Ossus wrote:I don't think we need to berate new posters. If, on the other hand, they are complete idiots then if they have a thousand posts they should still be ignored.
After all, I'nm just talking about a few slightly disturbing welcome pics.

Gah!
Just an aside, can we stop grouping all of SB.com together as a whole. As someone who's been there for nearly 7 years it's kind've annoying when one group slams an entire place based on the actions of a few people within a specific location within that place.
There are a number of VERY ignorant people (I'm talking Trekkies here, there are dumbass 5'vers and Warsie's too, but I'm speaking specifically about Trekkies here) at the VS forum. They are:
Lokan
ALI_G
PsykoSama
Vypr (probably the worst as he spins things, flames, and generally does everything but debate)
E1701 (the best of the lot, but he's so hardheaded and never conceeds on any point, like DarkStar, only he doesn't pretent to be winning all the time like DarkStar)
and DarkStar (but we know who he is)
I'd include Gothmog... but sort of vanished after MW ripped him in two.
Ignoring the trolls and people who come in with the typical "Yeah! What he said!" comments, it's basically this core 6 that bring everyone down.
There are probably equal numbers of dumb 5'vers ("Omega could take on 10 Sovvies and WIN!!!") and Warsies ("All hail Star Destroyer Rampant!!! IT IS OUR BIBLE!") there as well and, like with the Trekkies, they bring their entire group down.

If I had to use two words to describe this site, I would choose "nuts" and "fucking," although not in that order. In addition, I would repeat the word "fucking" approximately 15,000 times for emphasis, as this is simply the most ridiculous and ungodly site I have ever gazed my eyes upon. - Lowtax's opinion of DarkStar's Page

One of my very few forays into SB.com was halted by a brief skirmish with E-1701. I then figured that if those were the types of people on SB, I didn't need to associate with them. To be honest, I might have stopped working here if the first person I met was DumbShit, but by the time that I met him I was already reasonably well known on the board, and so I knew that he was not representative of the types of people here.

Oh wait...
Although, I have to agree that there hasn't been much of interest in the Vs. forum lately. That, and those goddamn 40Kers are really starting to get on my nerves... "lol 40k ownz all" "so show us some numbers" "um we'll get back to you on that".

I think it's rather intriguing how Alyeska can be so ignorant, so close-minded, and so petty when debating ST vs SW, yet be so like Mike in debating creationism and religion in general. He's one of the few ardant atheists on SB, and he tends to do a damn good job standing up to the fundies on the board (like Bryan).

Nope, but it attracts loads of morons, which it would be nice to get rid off.Uraniun235 wrote:Because, after all, those pesky Vs. Debates always keep popping up in the middle of serious topics in the main forum and the NSF forum.
Getting rid of vs. debating will force them to seek shelter elsewhere.

Probably something to do with Trek's unfortunate popularity. Either that or a total lack of taste on behalf of SF CGI hobbiests. His Divine Shadow wrote:Why do people want to model the perhaps ugliest ships seen on TV?

It's not berating really... more like friendly hazing. Nothing's meant by it, and most people figure that out pretty fast. Hell, a lot of 'em get into it and the threads go on forever. It's fun.
As for the SB Vs forum... damn I miss the glory days where we had essay-length debates and they'd be intelligent for the most part. Unless it was against secret or a similar troll of course
Who knows, maybe if I hadn't gone poof for over a year, I could have helped keep the Trekkie ordes at bay... but alas.

Wasn't he the guy who spent pages and pages and pages arguing that interpreting the ESB Needa quote "No ship that small has a cloaking device!" as "As far a Needa knows, no ship as small as the MF has a cloking device, but there really can be." equivalent to bullshitting?
Even when stuff in the EU (like the Emperor's shuttle) was dismissed by him as "BS", he still refused to aknowledge the quote from TPM when Qui-Gon asked Panaka (or Olie) if the Royal Starship having a cloaking device, claiming it was a contradiction in canon that the Warsies were ignoring. He also dismissed the fact that the Sith Infiltrator is described as having a cloaking device in TPM novelisation.
God, what an idiot. For that I'd say he's equal to FuckFace. That topic just drove me fucking nuts. Gah!!

Oh, yeah. Lokan is definitely one of the dumbest people I've ever seen. I'm still waiting for him to point out a single way in which canon contradicts any of the clear, concise stats that the ICS presents.
Psykosama is just a smallminded putz who can't debate, but only throws little trollish barbs into every debate (if you were to ask, once again, about the infamous "ISD vs. GCS" question, all Psykosama would say would be "ICS is BS, so GCS wins").
Vypr hasn't been a problem ever since I took a two-foot-long iron dildo, heated it up red hot, and shoved it right up his ass. The lil' fucker disappeared for a while after that.

Space BAttles, unlike HMBC I wasn't there in the Glorly days... but I have seen most of the debates, one of the reasons I've migrated here actually. I still see the same debates a lot, but with new people, and more importantly, we get to have to prove things all over again. It was a new chance to bring the 40K verse to a new audience, we'd established our power level over at SpaceBAttles, and so debates where quick... (Although the war, is as ever eternal)
Still I like the place, it holds a special place in my heart, it was my introduction to Sci-Fi Vs Debates. (No matter the Quality)
