Too be fair, that was a small portion of the actual government, just the corrupted senators.

Most people in the NR Government in the military, sector and planetary scale, and lesser functionaries were doing their damndest to stop the Vong.

As for the droids, at least the Republic/Empire used the right job for the right job, whereas the Feddies use doctor holos to clean plasma conduits.
Riiiiiight.

Why the hell do they need to re-use holograms anyway? They're programs!
They could make new ones for less trouble.
I suspect one of the UFP Commisar.. er, officials decided to humiliate Zimmerman.

I don't remember that one...

Some things in the 24th century can be funny. Q got off a few good
ones ("Eat any good books lately?"). Data could be funny, though
he wasn't trying to be most of the time (staring at Picard trying to sleep in "Unification," staring at his sleeping cat from about 6" away, blowing
off his one-time girlfriend and downright cutie in "In Theory" (?) ). His "Mister Tricorder" routine in an otherwise absurd scene in ST:G was pretty funny.

Quark could be funny. There was one DS9 episode in which everybody
started talking gibberish..."Babel" maybe. Quark was rolling around
the entire station using replicators, all sneaky-like, actually spreading
the disease. The way he rolled a tray of food down the cooridor
was funny in itself.

Needledicks could be funny just to look at. Again, though, that
doesn't really address the "sense of humor" thing. It's just people
and aliens being funny in spite of themselves

I think most of you missed my point about the Episode. What I mean is that the Doctor created this Holo-Novel that is a blatant parody of the Voyager crew (and an exaggeration). But for some reason the crew just didn't get it and were offended. I was sooo annoyed at how they were offended. Has people range of Humor been deflated in the 24th century. Personally I would think it was funny if I was in their position, and I would be a bit honored. Kinda like if you were parodied on SNL. (if it was a good one and not over the top) It seem like 24th century life seems a bit too confining for my tastes.

okay guy now respond. BTW Darkling I think DS9 was a much better written show character wise than Voyager. IMO, I think that most of the DS9 character I liked, whereas I can't say the same for the Voyager crew.

OK, just to clarify, we are talking about instances where we see characters telling jokes to one another or playing practical jokes on each other, as opposed to "jokes" that only the viewers are meant to get, right?

In that case, yes, I would daresay that a sense of humor has definitely been lost by the time TNG comes along. I clarify that because you see Kirk and company telling plenty of puns and jokes in TOS.

Perhaps it's tied in to the societal changes (ie. growth of Political Correctness) and a general decline in the arts. Take music, for example. Where are the new, sci-fi-styled compositions? Where's the "pop" music... or does everyone now only listen to ancient operas and classical compositions ("ancient" in the sense that they were considered "old" in the early 21st century)? Where are the movies, short films, even "art films"?

Now that I think about it, the Federation's artistic culture reminds me of the Tsurani Empire's "culture" from Raymond E. Feist's books. They no longer composed new music, but only made slight variation in the sequence of the notes; art in sculpture and painting was only allowed if it followed the popularly "approved' styles, and innovation or outright change was frowned upon. Even architectural styles had been frozen for centuries. Sure, the Tsurani were a warrior culture... but there are some definite parallels to the Federation's state.
