well all three of those ship were destroyed by battle damage to main reactor, so not that case for super-volatile (more like against it).Darth Servo wrote:They would retort that there is precedent for that thinking in SW. In Star Trek, a ship releases a vast amount of stored energy when it explodes, because for some asinine reason the system is designed to be super-volatile that way.

An idea that had been shot down long ago. What is it with Trek fans that think Sci-fi wouldn't exist w/o Trek? Sci-fi has been around for over a century. Can you say, "Jules Vern"?General_Paul wrote:Dude, what the hell? I give an idea, and you call me a fucking idiot. Well ya know what, you're an uneducated rude asshole, how's that?

An 'idea'? No, you were putting forth the same idiotic crap I've seen many Trekkies spew for years; "If it wasn't for Trek, sci-fi wouldn't exist!" "George Lucas would have never made Star Wars if Trek wasn't there to show him the way! Urr hurr hurr hur huRRR!"General_Paul wrote:Dude, what the hell? 'Uneducated'? No, that's yet another false statement by you that showcases your ignorance. 'Rude asshole'? Wouldn't be the first time I've heard it...Well ya know what, you're an uneducated rude asshole, how's that?

Ok ya know what, since I didn't do a damn thing to earn you calling me an idiot, why don't you EXPLAIN your logic? Since you have to be a rude asshole to get your point across, it obviously shows a lack of intelligence on your side, or a lack of self esteem since you find it better to lash out at people and insult their intelligence. Or maybe you just are a blatent asshole to be a blatent asshole. Either way, its not friendly, and I didn't do a damn thing to you to earn your flame, so just back off.
It seems most likely that all of these things contributed to the creation of Star Wars, as they all seem to appeal to different people (let's face it, not everyone was crazy about "2001," a 2 hour movie that feels like 4). Trek brought viewers to Sci-Fi that these other efforts wouldn't have and vice versa, which is often the way these things work.Lord Poe wrote:Don't be a fucking idiot. And by the by, the "fucking idiot" bit was somewhat uncouth.
Yes, you di. You trotted out that tired, stupid urban legend that sci-fi wouldn't have existed without Trek.General_Paul wrote:Ok ya know what, since I didn't do a damn thing to earn you calling me an idiot,
Ok. I'm sick and fucking tired of little Trekkie kiddies like yourself exhibiting your complete ignorance about a subject.why don't you EXPLAIN your logic?

I insulty no one's intelligence. I merely point it out when they obviously have none.
Depends on my mood. And right now, I couldn't care less for your fragile feelings.Or maybe you just are a blatent asshole to be a blatent asshole.
Neither is shitting on someone's lawn, but one doesn't do that to be friendly...Either way, its not friendly,
Yes you did. See above.and I didn't do a damn thing to you to earn your flame, so just back off.

Maybe you haven't heard this, but calling someone an idiot is not necessarily a response to a similar attack. It is also a perfectly valid response when someone says something that indicates ignorance, lousy logic, or stupidity.General_Paul wrote:Ok ya know what, since I didn't do a damn thing to earn you calling me an idiot, why don't you EXPLAIN your logic?

If you don't like the policy of this board where it's OK to flame somebody for saying something stupid, feel free to get the fuck out.Or maybe you just are a blatent asshole to be a blatent asshole. Either way, its not friendly, and I didn't do a damn thing to you to earn your flame, so just back off.

You were called idiot because you just made a pure emotional response, what logic did you use to claim Star Trek made scifi what it is? Then you cry and act like a child.General_Paul wrote:Ok ya know what, since I didn't do a damn thing to earn you calling me an idiot, why don't you EXPLAIN your logic? If anything Star Wars revitalized the Star Trek franchise. Star Trek was barely hanging on after their first season. Here's a quote from Roddenberry:General_Paul wrote:"Alright, ya know what, I'm wrong, I admit it, Sci Fi would be just fine without Trek. Happy?"
Sounds like if not for Star Wars, Star Trek would've faded into rerun oblivion (which did do better than original airings, but only enough to spawn the animated series, and that was canned after a season also)."There was no desire for science fiction until 'Star Wars.' For years I talked to the studio about a 'Star Trek' movie, but they said you don't understand movies,"
Well, Star Trek did surivive out there in the conventions, and considering how those conventions were cruicial to getting the initial kickstart to ANH with the Marvel Comics and etc etc, you can say that the fact that ST demonstration of the power of comic conventions helped direct SW in that direction........
Let him land on any Lyran world to taste firsthand the wrath of peace loving people thwarted by the myopic greed of a few miserly old farts- Katrina Steiner
Well, I'll say what I've said before. Star Trek was part of the evolution of science fiction in television, helping to pull it away from the bug-eyed monsters that Hollywood tended to view the sole content of the genre.
But because a lot of Trekkies got their science fiction start in Star Trek, they tend to view it as the Alpha and Omega of the field, or at least the Alpha.

Sorry, the entire premise of 'Star Wars would not exist without Star Trek' is just so much hooey. Before 2001: A Space Odyssey, there was Forbidden Planet. Heck, there was Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
While 'Star Trek' may have changed the perception of SF on television - certainly, Roddenberry kicked the door open and held it open - the networks kept trotting out Irwin Allen spectaculars and still, apparently, have difficulties grasping SF, hence the popularity of syndication as a point-of-entry for most series.
But SF existed well before Trek. The kinds of stories told in Trek existed before Trek came to the airwaves. Noted SF writers were invited to write serious dramas set in the Trek paradigm. SF goes back well before Trek, whether the space operas of E.E. 'Doc' Smith, or the works of Alfred Bester. (Bester inspired the PsiCorps for B5, but he also penned the famous Green Lantern Oath. Should we then say, gosh, all super heroes exist because of Bester? Hardly.)

let me point out that no Sci-Fi would exsist with out Jules Verne. He practically invented the idea.
on a side note, Star Wars owes it creation to many shows. to say it is only inspired by one show is extremely cocky position to take. To tell you the truth Star Trek owes it survival to Star Wars not Star Wars to Star Trek! Without Star Wars Star Trek II most likely never would have gotten off the ground with out Star Wars happening. Star Trek The Motion Picture owes its very exsistance to Star Wars! The Special effect were done by ILM! What more can I say?
