in star wars there is a certain trend to "real" things to entertain yourself. Hmm… call it decadence if you want to, the star wars galaxy is just very old and very big, they are properly very bored of fancy techi entertainment, that’s why dancing slaves and living waiters are common / it is seen as luxury to have living servants. If you have the money anyway you go of to some distant resort world and have fun there, with the luxury of beginning served by living beings.
If you want something done artificially you get a droid to do it, which is properly a lot more efficient then something like a holodeck anyway, which just drains power without limit and would need a lot more computer capacity then worthwhile, plus your droid fun world doesn’t run amok every second use (which seems to happen every other day in trek).

As much as I love Star Wars and would love to live in that society with all those toys, the lazy man in me is going to have to go with the Federation. I'd never have to work another day and they'd take care of me.

Hmm... they have interactive holoart and the like which seems pretty advanced, but i also think there is nothing like a holodeck, which always struck me as rather unrealistic any way, at least how it gets portrayed later on in Star Trek.Jadeite wrote:Holograms, yes, but everytime we see one it seems to be poorer quality then Federation holograms.Franc28 wrote:You're all assuming that Star Wars doesn't have the equivalent of holodecks. That seems like a rather unreasonable base assumption to me. After all, they do have holograms.
I mean something like it must use a huge amount of energy and computer capacity, alone to maintain the thousands of force fields to give photons the ability to interact with the user and somehow it seems to change the physics in the place as well (I mean a holoroom is a very small space, but people just keep walking without running into a real wall and they can play baseball on a full field in something that cant be much larger then my living room) .
In SW they could properly build something like it but it is most likely deemed far to expensive for every day use and the sw culture seems rather found of “real” entertainment. Even for military purposes they use simulators more the once we use today and in the cestus clone wars novel they have the clones train in a complex that can be adjusted using repulsors and a bit of decoration.
I just guess most star wars writers deemed the holodeck to unrealistic to realise, at least the way it is put in star trek.

I'd probably go with the Empire...I'm sorry, but the mortality rates on holodecks are too high for my tastes...

Empire for me. First, you have security. I don't have to worry about random Aliens of the Week invading my planet. Second, the fact that it is relatively easy to aquire a personal starship which exeeds Federation military vessels in virtually all categories. Third, alot more cool places to visit. In an empire of 10 million+ worlds, how can you get bored?

You're still assuming that Star Wars does not have holographic entertainment. It's an argument from silence. There is no reason why the Star Wars universe would not have holographic entertainment.

I have already given evidence that SW does indeed have holographic entertainment, the question now is what level of detail it is.Franc28 wrote:You're still assuming that Star Wars does not have holographic entertainment. Didn't someone invest in some horror amusement park in the Galaxy of Fear kiddie novels?
Ahh! Here we go!
The Nightmare Machine at Hologram Fun World is an interesting little tidbit.
One of the park's attractions is called the Nightmare Machine. It scans your brain, then shows you your worst fears in holographic form. Hairy, creepy-crawly insects. Cyborrean battle dogs thirsting for blood...
Damn, if that isn't just as as advanced as holodecks, if not more, I don't know what is.

The Vong Conquered the New Republic, a far weaker enitity than the Galactic Empire led by Palpatine. The SW Galaxy ended up defeating the Vong though, something the Federation probably could not do. I'm also a little shocked that the board's resident Borg expert would think that the Federation would stand a chance of defending its citizens from eventually one day being added to the collectiveRobert Walper wrote:Except the Empire only lived for what...ten years?
