There's also mention from the EU that Palpatine drained Byss of its entire planetary population's life force and could control the large ISD fleets by will alone. The character from the EU is like a whole different persona.

The only problem is that Palpatine's a glass cannon here. Sure, he's got the firepower, but one tiny slip and he's dead. It's all dependent on his reaction time and the starting distances. If he's starting out under surprise attack, it's not too unlikely that blocking everything (which he has to do) demands too much concentration and something gets through.Trooper TK12746 wrote:So I guess that the consensus is that Palpy would annihilate the Galaxy starships.
Do these EU sources give any description of how long it takes to summon a force storm?

He can use his TK to gain time.lPeregrine wrote:The only problem is that Palpatine's a glass cannon here. Sure, he's got the firepower, but one tiny slip and he's dead. Also how would Palpatine be caught off guard by a non force user with his :wank: Pre-cog?

Can he? Can this insanely powerful force storm be summoned with just a casual thought, or does it require significant concentration? Requirements for focused effort have been seen plenty of times before, so it isn't unheard of. If he has to divert all his attention from TK to force storm summoning for any significant length of time, he'll be dead before the storm can do anything.the .303 bookworm wrote:He can use his TK to gain time.lPeregrine wrote:The only problem is that Palpatine's a glass cannon here. And remember how fragile a ship he's in. Even if he stops 99% of the fire, he dies. Even a near-miss from a torpedo could kill him. This is the Emperor we're talking about, not god, as much as some authors try to make him look like god. He can make a mistake, and playing defensively here will eventually kill him.
By act of god, I would assume. The same way that his precog talents failed to warn him that he'd be in a helpless shuttle against multiple starships and allow him to avoid it. That's why I asked how far away the starships begin. If they can close the distance faster than he can summon a force storm (or his other nasty powers), those starships are facing a much less powerful Palpatine. Also how would Palpatine be caught off guard by a non force user with his :wank: Pre-cog?

Palpatine has pre-cog abilities, but they aren't at will, or his beckon or command. He is able to foresee certain events, but clearly by the fact that he died in Return of the Jedi, what he can see is not exactly consistent.
Force Storms are also not something that can be summoned at will, within moments of time. As a general rule of thumb, the more complex an ability is, the more time and concentration it demands. There was a Sith, thousands of years ago before Palpatine's time that could rip the cores of suns out and fling them at fleets and planets (has anyone heard of Naga Sadow?).
In this exact scenario, depending how long it takes for these Federation ships to get into weapons range (I'm not overly familair with their sublight speeds or phaser ranges), Palpatine is essentially screwed.
At the same time, however, there are Dark Side abilities were a powerful Dark Jedi or Sith can impose his will upon entire ship crews (Joruus C'baoth illustrated this in the Heir to the Empire series when he remote controlled a Dreadnaught), and since Palpatine has already demonstrated the ability to practice battle meditation (this is evidenced again in Heir to the Empire, and Shadows of the Empire -- I'll dig out page numbers, if needed but never neccessarily confirmed on film, although I did see a thread where someone pointed out that the coordination of the Imperial fleet dwindled as soon as the Emperor died), he may, be theoretically, able to impose his will on these assaulting starships.
My biggest question is, though, how many people are in these starships (what's their average crew amount)?
Overall, though, I think this is a pretty much lose situation for Palpatine. Palpatine does have very significant powers in the Expanded Universe, but none of his "super" abilities are summoned at will.
Just my two cents.

Keep in mind, C'baoth enslaved all 37,000 crewman of the ISD. Now, if your average Fed battleship has 1,000-2,000 crewman, Palpy can control dozens of them at once; and have them cause the chaos that any cackling psycho finds immensely enjoyable.
Why wonder why? The answer is simple: obviously, someone somewhere decided that he or she needed Baby Jesus up the ass.
