If they can't match the dissipation rate of the shield they could fire 100 petatons over the entire course of the battle but if thats spaced out so that it's below the dissipation rate, it won't matter, you need enough firepower to overcome said dissipation ratio.

If you remember in the films....It took Everything the -Rebels- had to take down one or two sd's in the final battle and they were on equal firepower with the empire(give or take) what in the hell chance does st even with the Defiant stand?

They would last as long as it took for the Captain to glance out the viewport and order the command to open fire...
