Only extremely isolate ones, few aircraft are actually capable of supersonic flight at low levels and none can fly terrain following missions at such speeds. In fact the main usage of the power that gives an aircraft supersonic speed is not to reach very high speeds, in fact its to rapidly recover and maintain maneuvering energy when making turnings and maneuvering in combat at sub sonic speeds.Admiral Johnason wrote:
There are cases where planes will fly at supersonic speeds close to the deck. And alos, he does say, "We're going in, we're going in full throttel." And I do believe that there was no air resistace and the DS's gravity couldn't effect a X-wing's speed that much.
Is impulse better than ion drives?

And at the end of ST2: TWOK, Kirk ordered "best possible speed" yet how would you react if someone tried to use that as an example of typical Fed impulse speed?Admiral Johnason wrote:There are cases where planes will fly at supersonic speeds close to the deck. You should never use a ships performance after a battle as evidence of what it can do before the battle.

Actualy at one point Checkov states they are 4,000 KM away from the Reliant yet a VFX shot shows both ships together.Darth Servo wrote:And at the end of ST2: TWOK, Kirk ordered "best possible speed" yet how would you react if someone tried to use that as an example of typical Fed impulse speed?Admiral Johnason wrote:There are cases where planes will fly at supersonic speeds close to the deck. But even using the 4000KM figure, it still required a minimum of 3 minutes to cover the distance. Thats an average velocity of merely 22kps and acceleration of 0.37km/(sec^2) assuming constant acceleration. What good Trek fan would ever accept those numbers for typical velocity and acceleration of a Fed starship.Alyeska wrote:Actualy at one point Checkov states they are 4,000 KM away from the Reliant yet a VFX shot shows both ships together.
Any intelligent debator would quickly point out that the ship was heavily damaged and therefore NOT a reliable figure. Its the same story for Luke's X-wing in the trench.
