Is it just me, or are arrogance and pretentious rhetoric proportional to stupidity?
Newbie pro-trekkies seem to just regurgitate all the little witticisms they've ever seen, and are so damn SURE that they're right, as if they've read a handful of debates but couldn't understand anything except the superficial comments.
Now that i think about it, they tend to talk a lot like Darkstar, eg "Your own words betray you sir."

Because we wouldn't stop debating. RedRebel, Rogue 9, and myself were still trouncing anyone who tried to debate.

Seriously, Winston, do you need someplace to upload all of that material so that we can share in its exploitation?

OMG, I just read that one 'tard who tried to attack the image of SD.net as being a logical and rational place by arguing that some of the members here misused logical fallacies during their debates. I wish I had seen that when they were still allowing posts.

I've got them arranged in folders but all the pages are individual so you can't click your way around like a normal site, someone would have to somehow connect all the links together if that's needed.

Hmmmm. I'd have to remove about twenty megs of pictures from my server space, but that's okay; there's a lot of stuff on there that I don't use and aren't likely to use online anyway. Or if Mike wants to set you up, he's more than welcome. Or The Kernel might let me have another thirty MB of server space to host them.

General tip to debaters: there is no way for the average idiot to contend with Grand Moff Tarkin's statement that the Empire has 1,000,000 systems under its control. None. Use it, and use it often. As part of the ANH novelization, it is unassailable from any angle. As I said more than once on that moron board, there is no way in hell you can shrink a 1,000,000 system Empire small enough so that Warp drive can be faster than hyperdrive.

I had forgotten that. But it raises a point: I have seen a few things on this dabate that people here need to remember, the Novel, it has much usefull information.Vympel wrote:General tip to debaters: there is no way for the average idiot to contend with Grand Moff Tarkin's statement that the Empire has 1,000,000 systems under its control. For anyone who doesn't have the novels (like me), i've found Saxton's page extremely useful in getting quotes.Stuart Mackey wrote:I had forgotten that. The last idiot we were arguing with, the one posting as a guest, refused to accept even the movie novelizations, kept saying if it wasn't in the movie he wasn't interested.

That alone doesn't make him an idiot. You cannot force a person to accept your personal preference of evidence. So long as his classification of evidence is self consistent and honest, I don't see a problem.Rogue 9 wrote:The last idiot we were arguing with, the one posting as a guest, refused to accept even the movie novelizations, kept saying if it wasn't in the movie he wasn't interested.
To put it in perspective, if someone were debating me about the Borg, but they considered anything post TNG unacceptable, I'd disagree, but if that's their personal preference there's nothing wrong with that. I'd simply point out that isn't my personal preference of what is acceptable evidence about the Borg.
Either side is only in the wrong when they start harping about how their classification of evidence is the only possible or acceptable viewpoint, which is not the case.
As I said, either example I mentioned (only TNG era evidence or only SW movie evidence) isn't wrong by definition. Naturally, such a stance is dismissing alot of other evidence, potentially favorable and unfavorable, but that's beside the point.

So what if i was debating you and picked a single episode where the Borg are complete fuckwads? All i have to do is say 'That's my canon policy, nothing else but that episode is acceptable' and if you don't like it, you're "harping about how [your] classification of evidence is the only possible or acceptable viewpoint". You can't play a game if no-one agrees where to play it.Robert Walper wrote:That alone doesn't make him an idiot. You cannot force a person to accept your personal preference of evidence. This guy goes beyond Darkstar in canon anality, how can you defend this shit?

Then we disagree on what consitutes evidence in any dicussion about the Borg, which means we won't get really anywhere. There's no law stating you must submit to any specific method of acceptable evidence, my way or yours. Your personal choice of evidence would be admittedly very narrow, but that's your decision.Winston Blake wrote: So what if i was debating you and picked a single episode where the Borg are complete fuckwads?
There's a difference between arguing what the official canon policy of a topic under discussion is, and your personal preference of what you choose to debate. All i have to do is say 'That's my canon policy, nothing else but that episode is acceptable' and if you don't like it, you're "harping about how [your] classification of evidence is the only possible or acceptable viewpoint". If someone wants to analysis SW on the basis of the movies alone, what's wrong with that? There's no law stating a person cannot debate on the basis of personally defined critieria of what is acceptable evidence. My only requirement would be that said criteria is self consistent. This guy goes beyond Darkstar in canon anality, how can you defend this shit?
Just because there's an official canon policy in place does not mean you are required to follow it. Debating the policy itself probably has a right and wrong side, but actually using the policy is optional.
