You may want to check 'Amok Time' again. It appears that Spock made a similar mistake that Han Solo made in ANH (using a unit of distance as a unit of time) by saying that by diverting to Vulcan they will only lose x light days. Don't you gain distance by diverting off course? Double check the episode if you have it.
