In TNGs "Power Play" Commander Data simply needed to swing his arm at the wall, bust it open, and use his body to disrupt the power flow overloading or disabling the forcefield. Needless to say, a phaser, let alone a blaster, would probably be sufficant to take down a forcefield with little trouble. Maybe that's why they didn't use the worthless things in ST:N.
Oh, but they did use forcefields in Nemesis —elsewise Picard and co. would have been breathing vacuum on the bridge.

Mind you, they should have all been dead anyway, considering how long it took to get that forcefield up. And of course, there's the issue of a weapon destroying the hull just metres away but miraculously not leaking an iota of energy into the bridge area so that this dramatic scene could take place ;)

I was more concerned thinking about the logistics required to be able to replace apparently any hull section with a forcefield, since we've seen time and again that such "wall" forcefields require emitters all around.

I suppose it would be similar to the "bubble shield" thrown up around a ship. The TMP novelization actually mentioned separate shields and forcefield systems, both used to block V'ger's attacks. Of course, that begs the question of why this forcefield was not already up, because it would have helped hold the hull together.

Over all; protect me from the ravages of vaccum and radiation? Blast Door. Accept no subsitution.

Hell, even on the few points about security and how force fields would be handy, I'd still take blast doors. Any security plan would dictate that multible doors be closed to seal off a section where intruders were. Its not a matter of closing a door as badguys approach it, more of creating choke points and limiting avenues of aproach.

I could see force fields as an emergency repair kit or simular uses. Damage in the hull trigered the blast doors and repair crews use portable force field generators to seal the hull while hull plates are attached and sealed. I can see force fields as barriers for bio and chemical waste and even radiation. More or less, I see forcefields as a novelty and specialty item over a big thick real life door.

Why didn't Obi-Wan destroy the forcefield emitters with his lightsaber or the Force when Qui-Gon was getting his ass raped by Darth Maul at the end of TPM?

(apologies if this has already been answered)

Well obviously no one is going to know for sure why he did not slice the emmitters, or why he did not use his own force powers to help Qui Gon. Its just one of those things, mabye he was too cought up in the fight. Who knows? :)

He didn't even try to find a way to disable the forcefield; he was just staring at the fight. It's possible that he was unable to think clearly.

Or that destroying the emitters would cause some kind of explosion, liberating the energy required to generate the force field.

He might have still been stunned from having been knocked off of that platform (or a side effect of something Maul was doing to them - remember that the AOTC VD notes that Sith can use Force powers to weaken/demoralize opponents, and more than just in terms of telekinetic abilities too.)

Agreed; he was quite obviously very tired by this point, and his control over the Force may have been strained. His exhaustion is clear: he was reduced to running at mere human speeds when trying to catch up to the closing forcefields, even though his master's life depended on him making it in time.

Additionally, we don't know much about the forcefield mechanism; it may have been impractical for Obi-Wan to damage them in time. For example, the critical components may be deep inside the walls, out of reach of his lightsaber. They may also be too strong for him to damage with the Force alone, especially in his exhausted state.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

According to Inside The Worlds for Episode 1, those force fields where being activated to stop radiation pulses from entering the rest of the power plant. So destroying them all wouldn't have been the best thing anyway.

I'm trying to figure out the change in Fed stuff from Blastdoors.

In ST6, in the combat pics of Enterprise, there are several scenes of crewman running down corridors. Even 1 where a crewman runs from explosion...stops at the bulkhead, and activates a rather quick (not SW quick mind you) blast door.

My observations...
