Can you believe it?

Post by Ben Ingram »

Over at the IMDb movie board some guy was telling me that the Federation could beam their starships anywhere in the universe. I hope that not all Trekkies believe that.

Point out the Fact that the entire plot of numorus TNG , DS9 and the whole run of Voyager where all about how the Federation could not get anywhere very fast

Hit him in the head and see if he feels better.
Seriously if they could do that then why did Voyager spend years trying to reach the AQ.
Know we why Voyager never runned out of Supplies!

It's not possible because Star Trek transporters work on the principle of carrying the matter-stream along a beam. This beam is generated by the "transporter emitter" which is a pad on the outer-hull, therefore the range of the transporter is limited to how much power you'd be able to put into the transporter emitters themselves.

Not only that, but there is the "pattern buffer" problem...
The pattern buffer stores whatever you're transporting while it's being "beamed" to it's location, as far as I know this is to stop it disappearing altogether if something goes wrong. I'm going to assume that it takes more power to transport larger objects, and that transporting an entire ship would be impossible.

Basically, I'm saying that the power needs to accomplish such a task are so phenomenal that it is completely being the abilities of the Federation at their current level of technology.

Counter with Broken Bow, in which puny Old Plot Drive proves to be much faster than shiny New Plot Drive (until Voyager, and Drive of the Week).

Not to mention that if you dematerialize the transporter, you don't have anything to materialize it back ;)

Isn't that precisely what One did in the Voyager episode Drone? He had, according to Janeway (I know, I know), an internal transporter, and that's what he used to beam over to the Borg Sphere.

It's hard for me to call it bad writing because I liked that episode.

LOL, I didn't think of that and it's so true.
Would also probably be hillarious to watch.

What frigging moron thought THAT up? The beaming anywhere thing. Look, the Trekkies who aren't spreading bullshit all over the boards (anymore, at least) don't believe that. Any Trolls reading this: PLEASE, stop giving us a bad name to these guys!

Of course not - if it was so, the entire Voyager series would not exist.
