How small could the Enterprise be . . .

The TOS Enterprise could do every thing of any value that the E-D could do (and more), with a fraction of the size. But could it have been made even more compact?

There would be no seperat sauser seaction, one soild section

Quadtriple Redundanceys on EVERYTHING
The Engie room is under armed guard at all times,
Five, No EIGHT diffrent ways for the reactor core to be vented

Strict Keycard access to every part of the ship COMBINED with retinal and finger print scanners, plus passwords for rescrited sections

A whole lot more secure is the main thing and one more thing

and actual fail-safe systems to eject the warp core, designed by people who understand the concept fail-safe.

~600 meters is the approximate official, although non-canon, length figure for the E-D given in the TNG tech manual.

A competent designer could probably pack all of the E-D's equipment into a 100-200m cube.

Another thing they could do is make the corridors on the Enterprise more compact. That also has the side benefit of giving stromtroopers some trouble if they try to board.

If you put in the naccelles, get rid of the neck part, stick the saucer and stadrive together, make rooms smaller, etc. you can cut several hundred meters off at least.
