Just Like to Say Hi, And a Pretty Non-Flammatory Subject
Hello, everyone! I'm Celidwen... Which you probably already know... But oh well.
I'd just like to say hello... I'm not making a good first impression, am I? Sorry.
Well, a friend of mine recommended this site if I liked sci-fi and debating. Well... I like sci-fi, and I like watching debates, but I'm not very good at debating myself. So, I'd like to learn how on this site, and just have some fun.
I'll confess, I like both Star Trek and Star Wars, equally. But I've read through the fights that have broken out around here over it, and I don't really like flaming, to anyone. So, for my first topic, I'll pick something that hopefully won't make anyone angry:
Which is your favorite sci-fi satire and why? "Space Balls" or "Galaxy Quest"?
I'm putting this here because "Space Balls" basically makes fun of SW, while "Galaxy Quest" pokes fun at ST. And, I don't think it fits anywhere else.
So... Will you cut me a little slack, being new and all? Thank you.

Liked Galaxy Quest more, because the level of which it specifically poked fun. It poked fun more at the unreality of the subject, while Spaceballs was more a comedy with SW as a major pusher throughout.
Spaceballs though loses nothing being what it is...but as to which I felt did better poking fun, Galaxy Quest(the whole convention bit alone)
Now watch out for pokes...and Verilon(he bites)

Ah, but the angry shouting is where the fun part begins! You haven't lived until you've experienced your first cleansing bath of flames. The carnage, the blood streaming through the air, entrails splashing over the cold cement...-Celidwen wrote:I'll confess, I like both Star Trek and Star Wars, equally. Hmm... tough call. I'll have to say, I like Galaxy Quest more, because it's more serious, not as goofy as Space Balls. It's simply got that hint of wistfulness and warmth that Space Balls, while a fun movie, ultimately lacks.Celidwen wrote:Which is your favorite sci-fi satire and why? "Space Balls" or "Galaxy Quest"?

Wow, I sound so professional. Astounding really.
Not a problem. This forum may look nasty, but it's really just a big softy.Celidwen wrote:So... Will you cut me a little slack, being new and all? Thank you.
(Yes, all of the forum. No exceptions.)

Welcome to SD.net.
In terms of the topic, I like Galaxy Quest. I think it's actually quite a bit funnier.

I think both movies are equally amusing.

*pokes with a small dagger*
Now that is by with.....I'd have to say "Galaxy Quest" does better in poking fun.....but "Spaceballs"
Merchandising, where the real money from the movie is made!
I rest my case.

Hello newb!
*goa'uldhanddevicePOKE*
Welcome to SD.net
I love both movies, but while Spaceballs was funny, Im an old school Trek fan and have been to a number of Cons and the opening 20mins of Galaxy Quest had me laughing so hard I hurt......its all true. The rest of the film was scaldingly funny as well.

Space Balls is ... in my opinion a classic.... but Galaxy Quest was really funny too. While they both parody sci-fi the are still different in tone, so I guess it depends on which tone you like best. I have to go with Space Balls, but I love most every scene in Galaxy Quest with Tech Sgt. Chen and Guy Fleegman in them.

Spaceballs' humour is sophomoric at best. It's the sort of comedy that has the word "screwball" on the advertising copy, in which every character in the movie knows he's a comedy character in a movie, and breaks the fourth wall on a regular basis. Childish humour like naming a character "Barf" is the standard fare for this film. It's typical of Mel Brooks' humour, which peaked with "Blazing Saddles" and has been sliding downhill ever since.
Galaxy Quest, on the other hand, was a comedy but it was also a real movie with a genuine story under all the laughs, in which you actually disliked the bad guy and wanted the good guys to win.
There's just no comparison as far as I'm concerned; Galaxy Quest is a superior movie.

I'd have to say I like GQ more, as there was more of a story, and I relate to that fan that guided them through the ship. When I rented it on video I got it the same night I got "Trekkies", and needless to say I got a new perspective on my life.

"Slack"? What is this... "slack" you speak of?
Ahem. As to the subject... I have not seen Galaxy Quest. Tim Allen is the devil. And yet, I have not seen Galaxy Quest, despite this high recommendation. But Spaceballs kicked God's own ass, if for no one reason than that it features John Candy dressed as a dog.
And now, prepare for your pokeage:
POKE.
