SW vs. ST mods

Post by Peter Gibbons »

Other than the ST Armada mod, is there anything else out there?

Or will we have to wait 'til some someone creates a Jedi Knight II - Elite Force II mod? (Can't hardly wait!)

there's a really good Star Wars mod for Homeworld called Star Wars : New Rebellion. Their webpage is http://www.tgu.org.uk/users/swfa/. v7.1 is the latest out now, but v8 will be out soon (hopefully) and from all indications it will blow away everything else.

There are also a couple of SWvsST mods based off of the one above, but they're not as good IMHO.

I think that StarCradft has some Star Trek vs Star Wars scenarios

While we're on this subject, wouldn't a SW vs. ST mod for one of the Jedi Knight games rule? It probably wouldn't work very well as a TC (Total Conversion), but might make for an interesting multiplayer options.

'Blasters and Phasers': One team of players are Stormtroopers, the other is Red Shirts. While the Stormtroopers get standard Imperial weapons and equipment, the Red Shirts get vastly inferior UFP weapons (no armor/shields!). For play balance, though, there'd have to be some way to automatically put some Stormtroopers in observer mode...about the only way the Red Shirts would have a chance is if they had a large number advantage.

I downloaded the Star Wars mod for Homeworld, I must say it's very impressive, given the overall difficultty of modding for Homeworld.

As with all mods there are a few niggles, such as there still being a requirement for a huge "mothership" type vessel to build units and for which there is nothing in SW canon or EU that can really fit well in its place (at the moment the imps have a space station and the rebels have a big generic rebel ship, although in the next version the imps are getting a huge Star Destroyer variant named the Tyrant I beleive).

Another problem is the maneuver style/speed of the fighters, they tend to starfe targets flying sideways and they move at such a rate that keeping track of them in heavy fighter combat is difficult (especially as you usually end up building at least 100 fighters, usually twice that).

However the huge numbers of fighters looks very cool when you've got a large capital ship battle going at the same time, the fighters form a grey cloud whizzing around the cap ships with occasional flashes of light from laser fire and explosions.

Maneuvering of fighters is much improved in the team build of .8, I must say :)

That and we've turned the NLIPS way up so the fighters don't shrink linearly with the zoom-out: you can still see them at minimum zoom.
