So who would you put into one. You have the historical database that can simulate the memories of ANYONE in the ST history. (That includes present day earth history). You must then prove this mix is valid by putting down an Orion/Ferengi raider using technology they have traded from the some minor power in the Star War Galaxy.

The ECH wasn't just the EMH's daydream. The ECH was used in Workforce when Voyager was evacuated. He did quite a good job of running the ship on his/its own.

Makes one wonder about the Prometheus episode (can't remember the title), doesn't it? YATI <sigh>.

I wouldn't put any of those historical figures in there. I'd put someone who is currently an O-5 or O-6, someone current on fighting a ship or commanding an air wing--so preferably in the air force or navy. Since it's a ship, most likely the navy.

OK, the ETH would have to have the following:

NO conscience or concern for the lives of the crew, but knowledge that it is part of the ship and as such, interested in preserving the vessel. This would mean that decks with fires, borg infestations etc would be "flushed"/jettisoned/destroyed rather than risking the enitre ship and crew just to save one plot-line character trapped there.

Knowledge of the precise limitations of the ship and its crew. And the enemy ship and its crew.

Database of every previous engagement.

And a decent freaking Order Of Battle, so they know when to fight and when to run.

If they could do that, then why haven't they done so? It would have reduced casualties greatly during the Dominion War, the Borg Intrusions, etc.

The only reason I can come up with is that Tactical Holograms is limited in the same way that the droids in AotC were limited; while they had an extensive tactical database they weren't creative.

So a ship commanded by real people would trash a ship commanded by holograms. This could of course be countered with using human captains and holograms for the rest of the crew.

Which again brings up the question: Why haven't they done so? Perhaps Section 31 wanted the technology for themselves for some reason?

This is Federation technology we're talking about.
One disruption to the functions of the ship and BAM! It's gone.

It's another overly complicated solution to a very simple problem, though I suppose it would fit in with Starfleet's methodology of always taking the complicated technobabble route when it can.
