What would trek look like if all tech is applied logically
What would trek look like if all tech is applied logically?
I'm seeing uber gunned battleships without silly hull shapes with power and weapon systemed crammed in. Most of the crew would be self contained holograms and ships would roll out at a fast rate with self-replicating ship yards strip mining planets.
And any one with normal knowledge of strategy and engineering can beat the federation with one suttle.....

Trek with fully realized technology would be pretty damned close to Culture except without the gridfire or effectors.

Hmm ok... First they would have armor.. Second there would be no phaser *emiters but acutal bloody turrets that can move 180*D and minimes the amount of space they take up
The Akira Class except for Armor is pretty much what a ST ship done logicaly looks like

The question is CAN this technology be deployed that way at all?SWPIGWANG wrote:What would trek look like if all tech is applied logically?

No, half that's a trekkie wet dream.Cpt_Frank wrote:The question is CAN this technology be deployed that way at all?SWPIGWANG wrote:What would trek look like if all tech is applied logically?

True trek ships could have a better hull form design and more firepower. The idea of hologram cold be done but doesn't make much sense. Why build a ship that needs crew and fill it with holograms. Instead just design it to be run by a computer no holograms needed.
The self replicating ship yards idea is just plain bullshit. We know they don't build enitre ships with the replicators much less starbases and spacedocks. Simply too large and too complex.

Not uberbattleships but you can build ships with more power. Look at the improvements they did make to firepower. Most likely the Feddies have avoided doing it due to the whole hippie moron thing.Cpt_Frank wrote:Yes this replicating ship yard crap was bothering me, too.
Also, what about the uber gunned battleships?
You'd need more advanced power generation and high powered weaponry.

I wouldn't either. That's just a pathetic wank fantasy for trekkies. Give them a few millenium and they may but not now. If they did a better job of design they'd be more powerful but there is no way they'd make a leap like that.Cpt_Frank wrote:No doubt they can do much better than they're doing currently, but I wouldn't exactly go as far and say they'd be equal with the culture or even the Empire as some people here do.
And now, Federation warp cores will explode by simple touch.Stormbringer wrote:Not uberbattleships but you can build ships with more power. Look at the improvements they did make to firepower. Actually, if they design them sensibly then they wouldn't do that. And that's the point of this thread. How would the tech work if it was designed properly.paladin wrote:And now, Federation warp cores will explode by simple touch.Stormbringer wrote:Not uberbattleships but you can build ships with more power. Would have less fallacies, such as unstable Warp cores and a more defensive outline for ships.
But seriously uber gunned vessel...most of these changes would requirea complete overhaul of the social structure well before you begin to touch the inadequecies of the fleet.

If all tech was applied logically, they wouldn't have most of their tech. They would have tech more like the Imps have.
BTW, the guy who opened this thread needs to calm down with the techno-masturbatory fantasies. I haven't seen that much techno-wanking since the last time I visited GK's site.

Lets see...
1 - Armored Nacelles on military craft except for ones specifficall designed as fast scouts or light escorts. (Assuming the reasons for having them as exposed as they are are valid that is)
2 - Dedicated ship types. No jack of all trades fuck-ups. An Exploration ships is just that. Fast, high endurance, massive sensor suite and extensive science labs. A military ship is power, weapons, sheilds, armour, ecm and other battlefeild vitals... minimal science departments if any, and NO FRICKING CIVILIANS!!!
3 - Multiple lower powered, but stable warp cores with multiple layers of saftey systems that don't rely on active systems (hell I'd make so it took active systems to prevent the things from getting shut down or ejected)
4 - 1 main hull for everything that can actually maintain integrity with having to resort to SIF's during normal operation. SIF's should be a backup, not your primiary structural support.
5 - If you've got to put the Nacells on Pylons, make em' thick ones that actually have some structural integrity.
6 - No energy-wasting replicators on military ships outside of the machine shop.
7 - Multiple integrated but physically seperated computer systems specialized for specific jobs.. with backups.
8 - Internal bridge with a full surround view screen so that the command crew can more effectively direct a battle.
well... thats 8 things that would improve SF ships greatly...

Physical windows.
That way if the ship really does lose all power, much of the crew doesn’t die in a half second from the explosive decompression of the outer compartments. That however assumes there sliding doors are air tight, which they just might be. If not, then everyone dies.

Right, but when someone who's never designed anything in his life tries to "design" something in sci-fi, the result tends to incorporate the childish assumption that you can just put unlimited amounts of everything you like into it without penalty. People tend to design phallic uber-power machines.SWPIGWANG wrote:uh whats wrong with techno-wanking? I mean this is sci fi right?
Sci-fi just gives people more opportunity to be asinine about it. We can all see how stupid it is when Manji does it with MODERN technology (see moronic mile-long battleship idea, or giant tank with 16" guns), but when sci-fi fans do it with fictional futuristic technology, they are often incapable of seeing the problem.
