We've all seen it; the Borg come and assimilate vessels and people. People become drones. But what about the ships?

Depends on the situation I assume. If the Cube is relatively unsupported it might use the assimilated ship for defensive purposes, or it might carve it up add to the Cube.
Other ships assimilated near the Collective might be studdied for a time or just directly converted into resources.

Borg Assimilation and adaptation
How do the Borg adapt to the weapons of their enemies? It is possible that in order to adapt to a weapon, the Borg must assimilate an example of that technology first? For example, if a Star Destroyer were to encounter a Borg Cube (assume for the sake of the discussion that the Star Destroyer can't blow up a cube in one volley) would the Borg, given enough time be able to adapt, or would it have to assimilate a piece of turbolaser technology first?
Re: Borg Assimilation and adaptation
Well, it seems assimilate of information from a ship as well as assimilating people from that ship gives them much information and adaption capabilities for dealing with those ships in the future. That was part of the reason the Borg were unable to deal with S8472, they couldn't assimilate them. But with the information they assimilated from the Enterprise at various times it allowed the Borg to deal with Fed weapons. First encounter, the E-D destroys 20% of the cube with hardly any effort. Second encounter, the Borg walk right through 40 some ships. Third encounter, the Borg destroyed 90%+ of a 300 ship fleet.Commander LeoRo wrote:How do the Borg adapt to the weapons of their enemies? It'd be cool to see a Borg shipyard/R&D center full of the absent forms of Borgified ships. A Galaxy-glass here and there, some Delta Quadrant ships...the blast damage filled in by Borg-style hull structure.

IIRC durring one Borg encounter you get to see the inside of a docking bay in a Borg ship and there was a Cardassian ship in there.Illuminatus Primus wrote:It'd be cool to see a Borg shipyard/R&D center full of the absent forms of Borgified ships. I always figured they'd have their computers downloaded and then get shredded for flak.RayCav of ASVS wrote:We've all seen it; the Borg come and assimilate vessels and people. People become drones. But what about the ships?

I always thought that assemilated vessels become the basis or core of what we see onscreen; the Borg simply keep building superstructure around the vessel until it becomes a sphere, cube, or what have you. The War Core might just have stuff either added or re-routed so that it either directly turns into the Transwarp engine or is added or routed to such.

There is nothing to say that there were 300 ships in that battle, much less that they killed 90% of the fleet.Alyeska wrote: Third encounter, the Borg destroyed 90%+ of a 300 ship fleet.
The Borg most likly use the ship when they need it for what ever is needed. Hence them keeping a mostly unassimilated cardie ship docked. They had no need to assimilate that ship yet.
Yet there is also times when the Borg dumped the ship somewhere (ie, the SS Raven - but they could have used that as a listening post, as it was on some planet in some other races space and was sending out Borg messages.)

Typical Shatner...that makes almost no sense whatsoever. Why transfer it to 4 dimensional space when you can just do it right in this freaking universe?Muad'Dib wrote:From the sources i read, one of Shatnetrs books, when i vessle is captured it is transfered to 4 dimentional space and there it is adapted into whatever use the Borg may have for it, One klingon battle cruiser was converted into a oxygen scrubbing system.

It would have to depend on the situation.
During the first encounter, E-D had a few sections removed to replace material the Borg Cube lost from a photon explosion.
At Wolf 359, there wasn't time to be wasted assimilating ships, so the glowing SF hulks were left to harbor and flame-out in space. Although there have been references to ships and people assimilated at Wolf 359 (in Voyager?).
In First Contact, the borg without any sort of material base began assimilating both more drones and technology and adapting it.
I think the same tactical decisions would apply in other situations. If a ship is worthwhile or needed, it could be towed in for material. If the ship was the last resort, it is assimilated. If the ship was a wreck, it could be left for dead, but that doesn't seem as efficient as the Borg would appear. Given time, a few drones could turn a hulk into a scout craft and begin collecting more drones and material to build a larger, sustainable craft.

Kind of like my theory on how assemilated ships get built up into cubes and stuff?Failed Glory wrote:Given time, a few drones could turn a hulk into a scout craft and begin collecting more drones and material to build a larger, sustainable craft.

What happens to ships assimilated by the Borg?
Not to worry —no matter what the Borg may do to them, in the end, the ships are going to a Far Better Place...
