Star Trek vs Star Wars: The Fans
On average, which franchise inspires the most fanatic loyalty amongst its fans?
What is it about that franchise that is so successful in creating zealots?

On the one hand, we have ST, headed by Berman and Braga, two of the most hated men in fandom, who have crushed the franchise into an unimaginitive pulp of crap.
On the other hand, we have George "I am a god" Lucas who has repeatedly told the fans that he doesn't give a shit about them and won't release the original trilogy that gave him his fanbase in first place and whose crappy writing has transformed SW fandom from a mainstream interest into a geeky wankfest that is often compared to Trekkieism, usually unfavorably.
It's hard to be loyal to either of them, honestly.

As for naming a kid, 'Anakin,' he was preceded long ago by others. When I was in college and working at a museum, a coworker heard a mother call her young daughter, "Leia, come here!" It was 1982 or thereabouts, and the little girl looked to be about four or five years old, so she could have been born the same year the original Star Wars came out.

For all that George Lucas has apparently told the fans to bugger off, LFL nonetheless has a pretty good relationship with us kooks in armor, whereas I've heard Paramount has gone to conventions and handed out generic C&D letters to dealers and fans alike. The machine behind Lucas, which powers ILM, Skywalker Sound, etc. continues to push the envelope in filmmaking as well, giving Lucas an 'empire' beyond Star Wars.
I think that Berman & Braga's problem was that they started believing their own press. That, and one too many trips to the time-travel well. Don't get me wrong, I love a good time-travel story ... but Trek was never intended to be about time travel, so story points had to be developed, and the 'temporal physics' of the Trek Universe had to be set forth - moving away from the roots of the 'human adventure'.

To be fair, could it have been "Leah," a biblical name?

Re: Star Trek vs Star Wars: The Fans
Wow, I voted Star Trek without looking to see what the results were, and it looks pretty lopsided. I just figured that I've seen a lot more Trekkies out there without lives to speak of, while extreme losers who worship all things Star Wars seem much fewer in number.Jaepheth wrote:On average, which franchise inspires the most fanatic loyalty amongst its fans?

Leia vs. Leah
It's possible, though the young girl was of age to have been born at the time of Star Wars' original theatrical release.Bob the Gunslinger wrote:To be fair, could it have been "Leah," a biblical name?

Any one seen the documentary "Trekkies".
After seeing that it would be a no contest.
There was this woman who goes to work in a Federation uniform wearing a phaser. (She was apparently one of the jurors in Clinton's court case).
A dentist who does his surgery building in a Star Trek theme (although I will admit that is reasonably tasteful).
Fan clubs making their own star trek movies, designing their own Federation uniform.
Fanatical trekkies all the way. And the fact that they can stomach Enterprise kind of gives them the edge over Warsies.

I'm really torn.
On one end...psycho Trekkies. On the other end, how many people in the UK listed their religon as "Jedi"?
Probably go with Trekkies for utter devotion level. Honestly though, I was expecting this poll to be about Trek fanboys literally FIGHTING SW fanboys. In that scenario I would think Star Wars fanboys would have an edge.

Warsies, what can I say? When you camp out infront of theatres for months upon months to "BE THE FIRST ONE TO SEE SW!!!1111", have a religion formed around something from a movie(jedi religion), constantly fight over which is higher "canon" amongst yourselfs, and lets not forget the crown jewel...... The Star Wars Holiday Special.
