Who else here is 'converted'?
This may sound stupid but when I came here I was a rabid Trekkie, thought that Imperial ships were big slow easy to kill things, now I know better. Anyone else have the same story?

*nods* And since those laser weapons move so slowly, their speed of light is also much slower for Star Wars, thus their 1.5 past lightspeed is many magnitudes slower than real lightspeed.neoolong wrote:From my time here I have learned that the Federation would dominate against anything SW. Re: Who else here is 'converted'?
I actualy came here with some measure of hope for the Trekies (not in conflict against the Empire). I hoped that ST would correct itself and turn back to the light side. After months here, I am convinced it will never happen and the only possible solution is the death of ST.Gandalf wrote:This may sound stupid but when I came here I was a rabid Trekkie, thought that Imperial ships were big slow easy to kill things, now I know better. They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

I've also come to that conclusion too, they should shut down for 10 -15 years, then come back with a good series with old style writing.

My original arguement was that I would hate to be the Borg on the Recieving end of an Ion Cannon Volley.

I always assumed that, for fairness and ease of writing, an ISD2 and a GCS would be more-or-less on even footing (I hadn't made the connection between 'laser' and 'laser-generated plasma' at that point). However, in retrospect, it is difficult to imagine a 30,000 to 50,000-year old civilisation being troubled millitarily by a culture whose oldest member has only been in space for about 1,500 years (using Diane Duane's figures for the Romulan Exodus from Vulcan).
I am currently writing a ST vs. SW story and I have had to 'wimp-down' the ISD's firepower a lot to make the big battle last long enough not to be a joke.

Just 6 months into my membership at SB I accepted that:
The Empire has greater numbers
The Empire has greater industry
The Empire has greater FTL
The total firepower of an ISDs combined weapons outguns a GCS
In short, back in 2000 I accepted that any full scale ST vs SW debate was pointless because the Empire had all the important advantages. I merely debated how much of a bloody nose the Federation could give the Empire.
Did comming here change anything? Not really. Before joining SD.net I had already decided to accept ICS because of the rules of canon, even if I didn't agree with it or believe it. I have learned more about certain aspects of Wars now that I have come here, but my opinions are the same as they were prior to having joined.

I have actually been 'converted' into watching Trek. I mean some very notable Warsies have recommended series and the movies to watch. I usually stayed very far away from it all. So there you have it.

It depends on what you mean by "coming here." When I first read Mike's site, I hadn't really thought about the two universes, but I would have expected the two sides to have comparable levels of technology, even though the UFP was far smaller. Since I read his site, I soon grew to understand that he was correct. My participation in debates has only helped solidify my position, as I have learned that the incidents Mike uses for his website are not isolated, and in fact are parts of a reasonably consistent trend.

Ever since I learned of the debates, I never considered the Federation much of a threat. Too small, too slow, too undergunned, too underpowered, too pacifistic. Of course, I also took up the debating platform that people were concentrating too much on the upper limits of the tech.. Not realizing that humans are in those tin cans.

Before I the ICS and before I found Wong's site, I was always on the Star Wars side of the debate because I was always more of Star Wars fan. BUT, I always assumed that it was just BARE victory for an ISD over the Enterprise and that it was mostly due to the fact it had fighters and bombers that would support it.
Other than that, I ignorantly believed that since we didn't see much flashy effects and explosions from TL's in SW and we saw them from phasers in Trek I figured that a single TL (didn't even know there were different classes or powers of them) was only a fraction of what a Main Phaser shot was. But due to the sheer number of TL's an ISD had, I still sided with the ISD and figured that its overwhelming number of weaker shots would still have a chance at getting the Enterprise especially when backed up by fighters and bombers.
THEN my friends, came the day when I stumbled across Wong's site. I was completely thrown off guard by the amount of information and effort that he put into it and was almost instantly "converted" and couldn't believe the idiotic things I believed about the whole subject before. Wong backed up everything with clear and solid evidence that I never even considered or gave much thought to and I just couldn't be swayed any other way after that.
The ICS for me, basically just solidified the Star Wars victory once and for all and was really just the Iceing on the cake as far as my view on the debate.

Originally when I saw the series, I thought it was good. After watching it a second time, I figured out it was mostly BS, the crew smirked every time they met a "primitive" race, the episodes were mostly boring, the acting was shallow, etc, etc, etc.
Before I came here I thought Star Trek was the ugliest piece of crap in the face of the universe... after reading all the facts in this site and reading the debates, now I know that I was being too generous.

And that's because you're delusional and cannot comprehend the meaning of overwhelming superior firepower and protection, numbers, speed, industrial output.Galaxy wrote: Now i've studied the subject and read through all of SD.net and i STILL think trek would kick imperial ass! HA HA!!

I always thought SW was far superiour to ST, in numbers and power level.
You just need to take a look at the DS or the Death Squadron in TESB and compare it to the puny SW vessels.
However, before visiting Mike´s Site, I enjoyed watching TNG and especially DS9 (not VOY!). Now there are always thoughts in my mind like 'soldiers without helmets and bad small arms! How lousy!' or 'This design really is stupid' or 'This looks like a Nelson-era ship-to-ship-battle' etc.
