I think I have this thread pretty well under control at SB.

Give 'em some real refutations, else you're just like Trekkies immediately post-ICS.

Roga Danar detonates a type-2 phaser in TNG: "The Hunted". It explodes with a good deal less energy than a stick of dynamite.

What's the point of refuting non-canon?

If it was calcs based off the episodes- then maybe someone would bother posting a refutation.

Also, I'm not going to pretend that there's any legitimacy to saying it's the same as ICS- all ICS did was establish what was already known from official material (Base Delta Zero, Slave Ship etc.) which did put firepower in the gigatons.

Also, we've seen level 16 blasts in the show. No such huge energy state increases were observed. In fact, the disappearance of the target is technically a mass/energy DECREASE, not an increase.

You know, Starfleet became even stupider once B & B took over (I guess I don't need to point that out). Remember on TNG, the officers would frequently use the phasers (type 1, is it?) that are smaller than the palm of one's hand, but sometime during DS9 they were phased out. We never saw them again.

I saw a few Voyager episodes were that phaser would have been a much better choice in certain situations, but instead they used the regular lame dust buster phaser. I think B & B decided that the smaller phaser just didn't look cool enough. What a bunch of assholes.

I remember Kirk and Spock used the smaller phaser all the time. I wish they would bring that back.

Perhaps if you scaled the DS down to that size...

Anyway, the main argument Trekkies had for such wimpy power was that they weren't set on maximum power. Tihs was refuted by bringing up how a phaser with the ability to destroy a building would have made it easier for the Federation in many cases. However, if it was that easy, then there wouldn't be enough content to fill an episode.
