Though if you did watch the instances where the TOS trio (Kirk, Spock, and McCoy) did go out in the shuttle, you'd notice that it was one cramped shuttle. Thus, the 3m figure isn't that impossible.

I've seen this shuttle in several eps... damn it was sooo small, I doubt that crew members could lay down on the ground. 3,5 m seems rather generous to me.
