duh, of course, how else are they going to make Arafat the focal point of the struggle. They have to do something to make him appear to be the only credible leader of the Palestinians.

As long as he stays, he is a known quantity that can be counted on to play the game a certain way. I think the only problmes the Israelis might really have is that they have to find a suitable replacement for Arafat when he does croak (of natural causes one would hope). The guy is old after all.

Mo-Rons.

They've expelled him before, and that worked just great; he was able
to lead the PLO to greater heights of terrorism.

Exactly.
I should have put a "Rolling Eyes" smiley in the original post...

They really should just start building a giant concrete dome over the half a building that's left in his compound.

The main problem, if you could call it that is what would actually happen if Arafat did bite the dust from say a hellfire missile fired by an Israeli Apache.

The entire benefit of Arafat is that he is a known quantity, give him a cushy enough life, and he could care less if half the west bank or Gaza strip starves or gets tied up in a sack and tossed into the Med. Heaven forbid if a real idealist comes around to leading the Palestinians rather than someone like Arafat who is more or less pliable.

As if. Sharon hasn't backed down. He was gagged and spoken for by the more rational members of the Likud party.
