Saudis adopt a US-style answer to attacks on foreigners

Post by Glocksman »

They're ending the ban on foreigners having gun carry permits
Laws banning foreigners from carrying guns in Saudi Arabia are to be relaxed after several bloody attacks on expatriates in the desert kingdom.
The interior minister said that expatriates fearing for their safety could seek a weapons permit.
Until now, all non-citizens - including private security guards - have been banned from bearing arms.

The Saudi Interior Minister, Prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz, said foreigners would now be allowed to apply for a permit to carry a gun in the manner of Saudi citizens.

"In principle, a Saudi has the right to carry a weapon, if he has a permit," he said.

"Likewise a foreign resident, if he felt in danger, he could get a permit to carry a weapon."

Interesting.

Most countries' reaction to attacks like this would be to tighten up on or ban weapons altogether.

I have my doubts about how effective a pistol would be against a group of AK or G3 wielding terrorists, but it does give one options that wouldn't be possible otherwise and it probably would be a psychological comfort.
"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."- General Sir Charles Napier

Do you contribute anything?

Eh, most terrorist attacks occur indoors, so an assault rifle is mostly wasted bulk and firepower anyway. I don't think these guys are wearing kevlar, so a good .45 would be nice to have around (of course a MP7 or MP5K would be more ideal, but I don't think the Interior Ministry has that in mind).

Unless the .45 you're talking about is an old Peacemaker revoler, you can still do a lot damage with a mordern automatic.

Heh.

Old revolvers were brutal weapons, tossing low-velocity lumps of blunt lead around, and were often more powerful than modern weapons.

Unless you mean in regards to firing rate and magazine capacity, in which case you were right.

Saudi Arabia is just a great place when it comes to personal weapon, apparently the first gun law they enacted mere set a limit of three inches on such armament, three inches being the bore diameter allowed. This was to avoid the Army being outgunned by local tribes, but still allowing them ot have small cannons which where often fired at celebrations.

Dodge City?

This seems like a good solution, but I question it's effectiveness.

The foreigners should be allowed to keep more powerful weapons like submachine guns and assault rifles to protect against AK-47 armed terrorists.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.
