Do American politicians really talk like this?

Salt Lake Tribune

My emphasis
Hatch backs nominee who backs St. Paul

By Christopher Smith
The Salt Lake Tribune

WASHINGTON -- Reading from the Bible on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday, Sen. Orrin Hatch endorsed a federal judicial nominee who wrote that wives should have a subordinate role in marriage, with the Utah Republican emphasizing "millions and millions of people will agree with" that view.

In a preview of the religious rhetoric that will likely dominate next week's scheduled Senate debate over a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, Hatch led the fight for confirming Arkansas lawyer J. Leon Holmes to the U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of Arkansas.

With Hatch's support and that of Sen. Bob Bennett, R-Utah, Holmes was confirmed 51-46 in the Senate on Tuesday evening, even though many members of the Senate predicted his nomination would be rejected.

Holmes' writing on abortion, marriage, slavery and other theological issues generated opposition from not only many Democrats but also some Republicans.

Fueling much of the debate is a 1997 article Holmes and his wife, Susan, wrote for Arkansas Catholic magazine titled, "Gender Neutral Language, Destroying an Essential Element of Our Faith." The couple wrote that under Catholic teaching, "the woman is to place herself under the authority of the man" in marriage and "is to subordinate herself to the husband."

Senate Democrats who are also members of the Roman Catholic faith, such as Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, have said the positions taken by Holmes "reflect a narrow view of the Catholic theology and do not embody contemporary standards that should be followed by any federal judge in any state."

Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Penn., lashed out at Durbin's criticism during floor debate. "We hear so much from the other side about tolerance," said Santorum. "Where is the tolerance for people who want to believe what has been taught for 2,000 years?"

After reading aloud from Chapter 5 of the Book of Ephesians, Hatch said "it gets pretty bad around here" when lawmakers condemn Holmes for quoting the teachings of St. Paul the Apostle.

"I don't think anybody can read this without understanding husbands have tremendous obligations in order to gain the respect of their wives," said Hatch. "You might disagree with St. Paul but there are hundreds of millions of people who agree with St. Paul."

Hatch also discounted criticism over a 1980 letter Holmes wrote to a newspaper arguing that rape victims should not be allowed to have abortions because "conceptions from rape occur with approximately the same frequency as snowfall in Miami." Holmes has since apologized for the comment.

"I find his statement to be insensitive and appalling," said Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont, a former criminal prosecutor who cited studies showing an estimated 25,000 pregnancies occur each year due to rape. "Speak to the family of a 13-year-old girl who is pregnant by being raped by her family's best friend, the next-door neighbor."

Said Hatch: "I believe all of us have made statements in the past for which we wished we could apologize."
Do US politicians often read aloud from the bible and bang on about St. Paul in the senate or are Hatch and Santorum unusual in this? I can’t tell you how weird it would be for someone to try something like that in the Commons (unless they read from the bible during the daily prayers of course).

Unfortunately, they're not the only ones.

I would, however, love to know how his own marriage works, and if his wife does 'submit to her husband'.

Shit, from skimming that at first all I saw was "St. Paul" and "Hatch," and I was like, "What the hell, did somebody suck out (high-ranking Minnesota DFL official) Mike Hatch's brain and replace him with a Republican pod-person!?"

Rick Santorum...A Village Voice couminist once held a contest on finding something appropriate that was a product of gay sex that from now on would be called a Santorum. The winner of the contest was the frothy mix of lube, fecal matter and condom lubricant that occurred with anal sex. Thus when you see that you just call that a "Santorum."

The "tolerance for intolerance" argument is actually VERY common on this side of the Pond. In fact, I'd say that fundie Christians have heavily co-opted the whole notion of tolerance, perverting it from "you should tolerate other peoples' beliefs" to "you should tolerate other people turning their beliefs into laws which are then rammed down your throats".

It's Rick Santorum and Orrin Hatch talking. If there were ever a pair of Far Crazy Christian Right Cocksuckers, it's that pair. This should suprise or shock no one.

No matter how many times I vote for the 'other guy' that damned Hatch keeps getting elected.

What Gil said, Plekhanov. It IS unusual to have a scripture fest on the Senate floor, actually.

Hehe, BTW, the judge they're mutually masturbating to said something to the effect once that pregnancies that occur from rape are as common as snowballs in Miami, and that entire argument for abortion is a red herring.

Yes, Orrin Hatch and Rick Santorum DO talk like that. All the damn time. Everywhere they go. They are, however, extremists. Elected extremists, but extremists nonetheless.... most Senators do not read from the Bible during session, except during filibusters when they've already finished reading the phone book aloud.

Orrin Hatch is from Utah, and a Mormon. These two facts presented to an American are enough to generate a  and 'nuff said! In the early days the Mormons were run out of New York State, Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, and parts between for being complete nutjobs. Superficially they appear Christian, but they aren't - they're theology is way wacko once you get into it. It's like saying Christians = Jews - sure, there's this common origin thing but they AIN'T from the mother country.

Speaking of Mormons - they refer to non-Mormons as "gentiles'. So in Utah amongst the Mormons the Jews are actually gentiles. Weird, huh? They also ban alcohol and caffeine both - so no coffee or tea. Actually it's based on herbal theories with roots in mystical things like alchemy defining plants as either "hot" or "cold" - not based on actual temperature mind you, but -- oh, bother, do you folks really want to hear all that? It's on the level of astrology.

The real pity is that the US stopped chasing the Mormons when they reached Utah - should have kept pushing them right into the Pacific and let them swim for China.

Anyhow - that's the stew that Orrin Hatch came out of. I'm surprised he wasn't reading from the writings of the Angel Moroni.

Santorum is just an asshole. I am happy to report than the term "santorum", referring to the wasteful foam produced by anal sex, is catching on. This required me to explain to the Other Half why I titter and giggle everytime I see Mr. Santorum spouting something off on the TV. Now if we could just get the entire country to adopt the new meaning...

I'll do my part!

This isn't really all that atandard in most of the states. There are still a high number of us Americans, even amoung us christians, who believe in seperation of state and church.

One only needs to point out that merging regilion and state has never worked. This point is usually lost on fundalmentalist, has they refuse to actually think.
