LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- State Education Secretary Richard Riordan jokingly told a child her name, Isis, meant "stupid dirty girl," prompting the head of the California NAACP on Thursday to call for his resignation.

Sometimes people say things so strange you just want to get into their heads and figure out why they said them. Like the time one of my classmates raised his hand, my history teacher called on him, and he said "I think your a moron" right out of the blue.

The most interesting thing about it is the mix-up about her racial background- specifically, organizing civil demonstrations for this heinous comment, this dastardly deed, only to cancel them when they realised she wasn't black.

I can picture a lot of body language and tones of voices where someone might say that and it's not particularly out of line. I think this is whole thing is a classic example of one person's over reaction leading to a rabid feeding frenzy.
