There are 6 so called "Zhan Bei Pau Dau" (Combat Preparation Runway) in Taiwan's highway system, all specifically designed for aircraft. I'm not sure about what they're made of, but the length designed is 2.3 Km.
And I think these roadways aren't a secret. I knew this stuff at elementary school on my first school trip. The Air Force already did such a thing with F-104s about 25 years ago.

They'd better do something like that relatively soon before Taiwan begins mass-deployment of PAC3 batteries (they might try and upgrade their Kidds for ABM work as well).Kazuaki Shimazaki wrote:Who knows? Maybe the idea is that they'd just get off a quick ballistic bombardment with their SRBMs and hope Taiwan surrenders real quick.

How many of those are they buying? There are a lot of missiles to shoot down.phongn wrote:They'd better do something like that relatively soon before Taiwan begins mass-deployment of PAC3 batteries (they might try and upgrade their Kidds for ABM work as well).

You realize that just adding something to the target list isn't the end of the story, right? Every suitable strip of highway in Taiwan will now require a sortie or a missile strike (multiple ones, most likely), and if the Taiwanese were smart, they put these reinforced stretches of highway AWAY from critical nodes that were already targets. Every extra target dilutes the forces China can bring to bear.Andras wrote:<China>

Taiwan may never have intended to use these highways for airplane landings at all, for all we know. They may just be a red-herring bomb sponge.

I'll have to dig it up, but they're buying a lot of PAC3s, possibly enough to do enough virtual attrition to make a PRC SRBM strike untenable.Kazuaki Shimazaki wrote:How many of those are they buying? There are a lot of missiles to shoot down.

Nitram: You -are- beautiful. Anyone tries to tell you otherwise kill them.

When their main airfields have been hit beyond rapid repair, guess where they'd try to go with any planes that can leave their airfields or are in the air. The airfields would still be hit first if there aren't enough missiles for everything, for a dispersal strip is a secondary choice at best.RedImperator wrote:Taiwan may never have intended to use these highways for airplane landings at all, for all we know. This might be true. According to what I've read there has been some constant critism that there isn't efficient logistic facilities or something like that near the runways.RedImperator wrote: Taiwan may never have intended to use these highways for airplane landings at all, for all we know. I always thought that the real deals were on the East Coast. (How real? dunno..)

(Though, again, from my experience, no one knows what the superiors are thinking, either. )
