The first underwater parking lot to be constructed in Moscow
07/23/2004 15:01

In a not so distant future, Russian authorities plan to begin building the first underwater parking lot in the Russia's capital.

According to head of the architect's bureau of Moscow's central administrative district Evgeny Lubimov, the parking lot is going to be situated underneath the channel, somewhere between the Church of Jesus the Savior and the Tretyakov art gallery.

Lubimov states that "this parking lot is of tremendous importance for the major project entitled "Golden Island". . "A civilized parking lot will enable us to attract more people," considers he.

Construction of the parking lot has been designed in accordance with a program of garage construction within the central district of Moscow. According to the program, additional 30 000 parking spaces are expected to be build by 2008. As a result, the city's center could accommodate more than 148 000 cars simultaneously.
Okay, granted, this is Pravda we're talking about, but this sounds like the kind of thing Russia would do right now.

Russians should be worrying about their poor economy first. Attracting tourism is not a concrete solution.

But it's very Russian-like. :)

That's nothing. To supply power to the remote regions of Russia, they're making floating nuke powerplants. Can anyone say "terrorist target heaven"?

Actually, tourism is a great way to help the economy of a poor country. If it becomes a vacation spot for enough people, investors will follow.

I think a city or country would have to first be appealing to live in, not visit, for investors to be interested in pouring money into the place.

If a sufficent amount of tourists are willing to go a place, then there is a profit to be had for investors.

An underwater parking lot? A few questions:

1. WHY???

2. How does a parking lot bring in tourists?

3. Isn't this a little more hazardous that it needs to be?

I'm guessing it's beacuse of space limitations, and the tourists they're trying to bring in would need a place to park, so they're showing that they will have somewhere to convienently park if they visit. Or something like that.

If people go to Russia and have a terrible time trying to visit any of the tourist attractions because they couldn't park anywhere, they won't come back, and they won't tell others to come back. That's why you need parking to attract tourists.

I don't know why, but this made me laugh quite profusely.

I tend not to believe anything about Russian mega-projects until they actually scrape up the money and start build them. Actually, that goes for all mega-projects, but Russian ones especially since they'd have a much harder time getting the money together.

I was hoping to visit Moscow in 2005 (for MAKS 05). It probably won't happen- MAKS 07 is more likely. I'll report then. :)

Well cmon, it's better than all the uncivilized parking lots with wild savages riding mammoths into your cars like they've got in Russia right now. :)
