HR 218 signed into law

Post by Perinquus »

The Law Enforcement Officer's Safety Act

It's about time!

This means that I and other sworn police officers can now carry a concealed weapon in any state. This is a measure which is long overdue.

:wtf:

Okay, I DID NOT know that police officers could not carry concealed weapons in some states. Is that when in uniform, or when undercover/civillian clothes?

Ah, if I am in uniform, my weapon will not be concealed, now will it?

Much as I'd like that, the Feds would be overstepping their power to rewrite all state gun laws like that.

Cool, that might give cops the RS needed to do a terry frisk whenever.

This reminds me of that story a week or two ago with the retired NY police officer who was in New Jersey, and shot a carjacker. He got busted for having a concealed weapon in another state in which he wasn't liscensed. Haven't heard anymore on that case, but I assume this new law would help with stupid situations like that, so sounds good to me.

No, I think you should have to demonstrate some competency with a firearm to carry it concealed. Thus, go get the permit.

I'm reasonably certain the lack of such a permit is what he's complaining about...

You might be right. I didn't consider the possibility that some states might not offer permits for concealed weapons.

Yeah, see, this bill allows Cops wherever they are, from Bumfuck, Ohio
or whatever, to carry concealed, even if they're off duty in the Big
Apple, while us peons who do have concealed weapons permits in our
home states get screwed if we try to visit a state that doesn't do
reprocity with our state.

Actually, by simply forcing all states to recognize each others concealed carry permits like they must recognize other legal documents and ID's we could have almost the same affect, but without any new laws.

Quite true, otherwise, you would have to have concealment permits only issued by the ATF in order to get around the different states illegally limiting rights granted by another state. (Driver's licence, voting franchise, marriage etc)

Or basically the whole lack of honoring gun permits from state A to state B, could be argued on the same grounds as those that made "Jim Crow" laws illegal, basically since the states are all still part of the union, another state or county can not deny you any right that you already possess in an equal or greater body.
