Israelis go off the deep end with "human chain"

Post by The Kernel »

Jesus Fucking Christ, I had no idea that so many Israelis were so completely batshit insane. Is it just me or is Sharon starting to look like the reasonable one in their government? Fuck, this is some scary Manifest Destiny shit right here...

Yahoo News
Yahoo News wrote:NEVE SHALOM, Israel - Singing the national anthem and waving Israeli flags, tens of thousands of Jewish settlers and their supporters joined hands to form a human chain along a 55-mile route, serving notice they will fight Prime Minister Ariel Sharon (news - web sites)'s plan to withdraw from the Gaza Strip (news - web sites).

In the West Bank, Israeli soldiers shot to death six members of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades in a gunbattle in the town of Tulkarem, the military said. Palestinians officials said five militants and a teenage bystander were shot in a restaurant. The Aqsa movement, which is loosely linked to Yasser Arafat (news - web sites)'s Fatah (news - web sites) movement, has claimed responsibility for many suicide bombings in Israel.

Sunday's demonstration was the largest yet against the plan to dismantle Jewish settlements and pull Israeli forces out of the Gaza Strip. The plan, which has strong international support, including from the United States, has cost Sharon his parliamentary majority and left him fighting for political survival.

Police put the turnout as 70,000 but organizers spoke of 150,000 participants. Israeli media estimates ranged from 70,000 to 130,000, including some members of Sharon's own Likud Party.

People of all ages lined the dusty roads from Gaza to Jerusalem, many wearing orange baseball caps, a reference to the color of the Gaza settlers' movement, which organized the protest.

"I have come to demonstrate against the disengagement of Jews from the land of Israel, " said Alexander Slonim, 65, of the southern city of Beersheba. "If Sharon wants to disengage, he should do it to the Arabs, because they don't belong in the Land of Israel."

Hundreds of buses carried people to various points along the route, which began at that northern Gaza settlement of Nissanit and ended 55 miles later at Jerusalem's Western Wall, with a few broken stretches in between.

The daylong event climaxed at 7 p.m. when organizers with bullhorns called on demonstrators to clasp hands and sing "Hatikvah," the national anthem. Many waved Israeli flags and the orange banners of the settler movement.

"When all of us stand here and hold hands, it demonstrates just how united we are." said Yitzhak Fogel, 58, from the Tel Aviv suburb of Bnei Brak.

As the demonstration was winding down, Palestinians fired mortars at a Jewish community center in the largest Gaza settlement, Neve Dekalim, wounding six Israeli children, one seriously. Hours later, Israeli troops firing from tank-mounted machine guns killed a 50-year-old woman Palestinian woman in Khan Younis, a few miles from Neve Dekalim.

Almost all the demonstrators were Orthodox Jews, who believe the West Bank and Gaza Strip (news - web sites) are part of the biblical birthright of the Jewish people. Polls show a majority of Israelis in favor of Sharon's plan to abandon the Gaza Strip, which has less historical significance than the West Bank.

Sharon announced in December that he planned to withdraw from the Gaza Strip and four West Bank settlements by the end of September 2005. Opponents fear plan will encourage Palestinian violence and lead to further pullouts in the West Bank, home to vast majority of Israel's 240,000 settlers. About 7,500 Jewish settlers live in the Gaza Strip among 1.3 million Palestinians. Both territories were captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war.

The plan drew such fierce opposition from hard-liners that the prime minister fired two critics in his own Cabinet, costing him the support of his Likud Party, which rejected the plan in a May 2 party referendum.

Defying the vote, Sharon won Cabinet approval in June for a watered-down version of the pullout, but still has to get approval from Parliament.

Struggling to hold onto power, Sharon is trying to form a coalition with Shimon Peres' left-center Labor Party. But hard-liners in Sharon's government — including Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom — oppose joining forces with Peres.

Shalom gathered some 1,000 members of Sharon's Likud Party in Tel Aviv late Sunday, where participants spoke out against a Likud-Labor alliance and the withdrawal plan.

I dont see anything wrong with gathering together to show your resolve. I mean, thats some def fucking resolve to form a chain that long. That is their home, and Sharon is taking away their protection. Maybe here removing troops wouldnt mean anything at all, but if you are a Jew in Gaza, you need those troops just to get your children to school.

Emphasis mine. If you think there is nothing wrong with this sort of attitude then you need to have your head examined.

Sorry, hehe didnt mean to sound rude in that last post, its just that a Jew claiming israel belongs to them and not the Arabs really isnt anything new. Both sides yell about it all the time. The chain, however, was really more aimed at Sharons plan to pull the troops out (which, I guess, in the big picture was about wanting Israel back)

Do you think its just a fucking coincidence that the AP decided to use that particular quote? When a reporter selects a quote to represent a news story like this, he's usually going for a viewpoint that is shared by more than a handful of the participants.

I guess you didnt get my sarcasm..I was saying that thats what they would mostly ALL say if you talkedto them. They want the arabs out of israel, they always have (hell, they went to all out war to oust them just minutes after they officially got there...ok, not minutes but it was nutty.) Having a reporter report that a Jew wants Arabs ousted is really no surprise. They do it all the time, hell..Jews here in the states say these things.

Indeed, both sides do yell about it all the time. However, this is the first time I've heard of a 100,000 strong protest of Israeli settlers trying to force the issue.

I got your sarcasm, I just didn't see it as an effective way to prove your assertion that there is nothing wrong with this sort of protest. I would argue that this protest proves pretty effectively that this situation is never going to be resolved amicably since both sides feel they have a divine right to a shitty piece of land in the middle of the desert and are unwilling to compromise on the issue despite huge international pressure. THAT is what is truly fucked up about all this.

The majority of the Israelis support a Gaza pullout, actually. 100,000 is a lot but only a minority.

And for my next trick, I'll substitute a few trivial words in this benign sentence:

"If Sharon wants to disengage, he should do it to the Arabs, because they don't belong in the Land of Israel"

to turn it into an automatically racist and unacceptable idea ...

"If Sharon wants to disengage, he should do it to the blacks, because they don't belong in the Land of Whites."

Remember, if you thought the first sentence was racist and that the substitutions I made didn't change anything, then you're an anti-Semite.

Maybe they shouldn't have set up settlements in Gaza to begin with. It was against the Geneva Conventions, you know, with the prohibition of sending settlers to colonize war zones.

As an Israeli, I'll say this:

The State of Israel lost a great oppurtunity to raise it's average IQ greatly today. I kept thinking as I saw the pics - "M-60's in middle.... BLAZE!!!!".

They are NOT all of us, these morons. THEY are one of two groups:

A) The moronic shitheads who think "Adonai will be with us" overrides common sense and the tiny fact that sooner or later we ARE going to burn through the U.S's goodwill. If Sharon drags his feet HERE, just where the U.S wants him.... well, even Bush or Kerry will cut fellatio, funding AND U.N vetos. The official oh-shit scenario. Dammit. The annoying thing? The Likud party that has these morons in it(them and the Mafdal, though that's outnumbered by our anti-religous party, Shinui - "Change", for whoever cares) has voters that are IN FAVOR OF WITHDRAWING. And yet, despite Sharon's enormous difficulty in moving politically what with most of the Likud agaianst him, they'll STILL fucking vote Likud in the next election? Why? Because "they're Likud voters". That's it. Fuck em'.

B ) The second or third-generation settlers, who've never known another home. THEY have a right to be pissed - they're only there due to the goverment's ENORMOUS mistake of letting settlers onto the 1967 gains instead of keeping it as a peace token. Then, continuing by putting off a withdrawl that bred more people who grew up as settlers and really don't see the problem. Man, it was an understandable mistake in the post-67 euphoria, but man is it biting us in the ass now...

Israel: the country of a non-univeristy-attendee Education Ministress and a barred-from-Defense-Minister Prime Minister....

You want to improve our situation, guys. One more weapons shipment. Delivered at the end of a missile, from an Apache, straight at Likud, National Union(even more right-wing...), Mafdal(religous military nutsos), Shas(Ultra-Orthodox parasitical fanatical scumbags) and Torah Judaism(ditto) conventions. With armed high-yield warheads as a courtesy detail. Solve a LOT of problems...

This reminds me of a column by Joe Sobran "Am I Un-American?". Kind of along the same lines as Jeff Foxworthy's "You Might Be A Redneck" shtick. I'm tempted to start a new thread, but I'll start here:

Since New Zealand arrested and jailed Israeli spies, Kiwis are anti-Semites.

That's fine; it's just annoying that if someone says he can understand why Palestinians might cheer in the streets at the destruction of the WTC, he is immediately lambasted as an anti-American extremist.

Of course not, these boards did not exist until 10 months after 9/11. :D

In the aftermath of 9/11, there were two camps: those whose political dialogue was pretty much limited to "kill all the fuckers, look at how they dance in the streets, this proves that they're EEEEEEVILLLLLL!!!!!!" and those who dared to say that there were rational reasons why they would react that way. And let's face it; the Palestinians do have more intelligible reasons to hate America than the Israelis do to believe that the Occupied Territories are sacred property of the Jewish people.
