Electoral College and Battleground states

Post by Stravo »

I've seen it often here whenever the question comes up about the Electoral College and getting rid of it. Small states people invariably complain that otherwise they will be ignored. Guess what? In this campaign the president and Kerry are focussing on key battleground states almost to the exclusion of others. Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsyvania, Florida. How is this any fairer to the other states when pollsters immediately identify whose electoral votes are up for grabs and throw their efforts into those small handful of states. Sounds to me like nothing really gets solved that way either.

I agree with your sentiment, but the pro-EC people are correct that it is highly unlikely to change just because we think it is unfair. That doesn't mean that we shouldn't push for change, just that we shouldn't expect anything anytime soon.
